The book of Joshua presents the sensitive reader with a problem; the slaughter of the indigenous Canaanite population in order for Israel to occupy their land. How are we to understand this today, and what lessons can we learn from it in general, and particularly regarding how we understand God and the paranormal? This is a legitimate issue that deserves a reply--but I will only be able to touch on some basics--for fuller reflection one will need to see more in-depth articles. Any similar actions today would rightly be condemned by Christians, but there are special features to Israel's actions which are unique, which means their actions are not to be imitated today. This command to Israel is one reason that the Pentateuch goes into so much detail regarding the singular divine calling of Moses. The commands given and written by Moses originate in God's own mind (Deuteronomy 18:15-20). Without this certainty of Moses as God's spokesman, Israel would have had no right to the land.In fact, in Deuteronomy 18:9-14 God tells us how much He hates occult sins (e.g.psychics/mediums, and attempts to speak to the dead) and this is intentionally juxtaposed to Moses call...showing that the prohibition is trans-cultural and trans-generational in authority. It was these very sins which called forth God's wrath, using Israel as His vessel of judgement.
A second preliminary point is that He sets out laws of warfare which distinguish between battles fought against cities outside the Promised Land (Deuteronomy 20:16-18) and those fought against cities in the Promised Land. Only the latter were required to be devoted to complete destruction (Deuteronomy 20:1-20). With these clarifications, let us now (in mere outline form) show why this command is not an unsovable problem.
1. It is crucial to understand that Yahweh is the Creator and owner of all people and lands. Hence, He has the right to distribute lands according to His good and holy will (Exodus 19:5; Psalm 24:1) He is also (and this is so very important in the ghost debate) the universal Judge, to whom all people everywhere are accountable. This can be seen in the Flood account in Genesis 6-8; the judgement on the Tower of Babel, and all throughout both the Old and New Testament. Thus, God alone has the ultimate rights over the land of Canaan, and bring them into judgement for cosmic treason against His holy character and will.
In addition, as the Creator of life, the Lord has the right to end one's life..or an entire nation.. In fact, God is sovereign over your death, and that moment is in His hands (Psalm 139) God has the right to "kill" anyone at anytime....which we call 'death'.. We are not God, so abortion is not our prerogative. Behold, your God!
2. Since all people are sinners (Romans 3:23), they are subject to God's judgement (6:23). The bible gives a moral rationale for the destruction of the Canaanites. (Deuteronomy 7:1-5) If the Jews did not kill all the Canaaanites, then they would lure them into idolatry. We are told in the New Testament that believers will participate in the final judgement (1 Corinthians 6:2). Likewise, Israel was God's instrument of judgement, expressing to the watching world the holy character of God, and foreshadowing the Day of Judgement (hell) and our participation in the carrying out of the final judgement. To the extent that Israel mirrored God's holiness and justice, the surrounding nations outside the Promised Land were blessed by this holy war. In nations which were drowning in occult darkness, being exposed to the light of truth regarding the True God, was very much a blessing, to those who received it.Behold, your God!
The Amorites and other Canaanites were not "innocent people"....they hated Israel and they were unspeakably depraved.... They were given 400 years to repent, but unlike Ninevah, most did not repent.
Some people have wrongly called this "ethnic cleansing", but there was no double standard. Israel herself experienced God's wrath multiple times--they were blessed if they obeyed but they were cursed by God if they committed spiritual adultery. Ethnic cleansing is occurring today and Christians should be the first to oppose it.
3. The Sinai covenant set up a unique entity--a theocracy--in which church and state were combined.Hence, the distinction between sin and crime was not as it is today (since we are not a theocracy).Sin would pollute God's covenant community. Over and over and over again, the Lord warned the Israelites that they HAD to destroy the Canaanites or they would most certainly be dragged down by them. Sadly, that is precisely what happened. We could call it "the Canaanization of the Jews". The first city they destroyed was Jericho (one of the oldest cities on earth..perhaps the oldest), which was symbolic of the whole land. The city's name has reference to the moon, so they likely were worshippers of the moon...a moon idol behind which were demons.Canaan was teeming with idolatry and ritualistic murder, and as a result it was a stronghold of Satan...teeming with demons.Idolatry, injustice, and evil were everywhere, and this triad is what Yahweh wanted to protect His elect people from, the apple of His eye. As we are told, the Canaanites sin had reached "fullness', making them ripe for judgement. The people had become so corrupt the very land is said to have vomited them out. Behold, your God!
4. The apparent implacability of total slaughter with no exceptions was just that, an appearance. The verbiage is strong, but provision was made for any who were converted to Yahweh (e.g. Rahab) It was not ethnic cleansing that occurred, but rather it was spiritual cleansing.Ethnicity had nothing to do with the Canaanites destruction because, from day one, the Jews were a mixed bunch. They were supposed to be a light to the nations, according to the Abrahamic covenant.
In summary, God's ownership of all land and the One who judges the world with perfect justice, the need to protect the purity of the Israelite theocracy, the depravity of the Canaanites had reached a critical mass, and provisions for even the Canaanites to be saved--all illustrate the justice behind this holy war of annihilation. That was a unique part of Israels mission, and nobody today can follow in their footsteps. Again, it was not ethnic cleansing (Christians should strongly oppose any such actions) but it was spiritual cleansing.
When I watched the Dead Files last Friday, I was alarmed that, once again, Amy put the blame on evil dead kids who were out to kill the living adults. This trio of alleged earthbound children supposedly pushed a woman down the steps (according to this medium), and she is blessed she wasn't killed. Last week she recommended a curandero (sorta like a shaman), and this week (not sure if it was a re-run) she said, "I was going to recommend an exorcism, but you need a chaos magickian." Even many occultists are fearful or least wary of these people. I mention all this as an application of what we have learned. 2 Corinthians 10 tells us that we are to destroy (not the Canaanites) but arguments or ideas contrary to God's holy word. We are in a holy war, not jihad as Muslims practice, but a holy war nevertheless. How can one believe in children being trapped here (and killing people)? It is madness. The cure for such monstrous beliefs is a fresh vision or understanding of God's absolute holiness. Wrestling with the destruction of the Canaanites should make it abundantly clear how holy God is, and how contradictory to God's holiness are the foundational beliefs of the paranormal community.Christians, behold your God!

What is Demonic Collusion?
By Reverend Mark Hunnemann
EDITOR'S NOTE: This blog was originally posted on March 20, 2014. Mark will have a new blog next week.
COLLUSION--secret cooperation for an illegal or dishonest purpose. (Webster's Dictionary)
"Error, indeed, is never set forth in its naked deformity, lest, being thus exposed, it should at once be detected. But it is craftily decked out in an attractive dress, so as, by its outward form, to make it appear to the inexperienced (ridiculous as the expression may seem) more true than truth itself." (Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.2)
Corruptio optimi pessimum est (the corruption of the best is the worst).
As I was sitting and watching, a strong wave of panic rushed over me...I was watching last week's Ghost Adventures in which a young man dressed up as Satan began to read Satanic incantations (this was part of a Halloween factory they were investigating), BUT thankfully, they put a strong warning on the screen and muted his words entirely. These guys are known for doing whatever they can to stir the "hornet's nest" but I was petrified that millions of people were going to hear stuff they really, really do NOT need to hear. So, my hat goes off to the GA trio for making a very wise choice in this matter. Did you also notice the adult content warning at the outset? Good for them.
As many of you know, the TV show which follows GA is the Dead Files. My forte is not that of an investigative reporter, in which Amy Allan's credentials are put under scrutiny. Kirby does that exceptionally well, so my focus is elsewhere. In the text quoted above, we are told that we need--like Paul--to be aware of Satan's schemes...the way he operates. We must be aware, acutely aware, of certain diabolical strategies which are used over and over.
COLLUSION--is one such strategy which we must be aware of so that we are not misled by Satan's deceptions. It is defined as, "Secret cooperation for an illegal or dishonest purpose." (Webster) Forgive the repetition regarding the Dead Files, but I personally think it is THE show which most clearly showcases this particular diabolical scheme.
Suppose there was a car accident which four different individuals were eyewitnesses to....all from different angles. Let me ask this--what would you think if all four eyewitnesses agreed on EVERY single detail, in their reports to the police? They even used the exact same words to describe certain details of the accident. There would be something fishy about that, wouldn't there? The investigating officer might begin to wonder how much they had talked afterwards...and tried to make their stories sound alike. This certainly happens in other scenarios, and too much agreement can be as problematic as too little agreement amongst witnesses. When there is intentional behind the scene working to make stories line up with each other, it is known as collusion. People can be very creative in how they do this in order to haul in some cash. However, the true masters of collusion are Satan and his band of demons.
And as I have alluded to before, I do not know of a TV show which showcases this diabolical collusion more masterfully than the Dead Files. The result is a very, very convincing deception, which looks "truer than the truth." (Irenaeus) Please bear with me on this, because I well remember how deeply troubling it was for me when I first encountered demonic collusion of this kind. It almost threatened to overcome what I knew to be absolute verity/truth. I NEVER want to lose my sensitivity to what seekers experience when they are overcome with dizzying displays of complex collusion, as witnessed on the Dead Files. Feel free to disagree, but I am convinced that there is an immense amount of serious demonic scheming and activity going on during this show.
If you have the potential to deceive millions, then one would expect there to be exceptional demonic strategizing. This past week was no exception. Sure the producers cut and paste between Amy and Steve, but there is ALWAYS a string of scenes where both are coming to the exact same conclusion, "independently" of each other regarding a remarkable array of historical detail. However, the sad fact is that this former homicide detective is being "collusively played" just as much as his partner, Amy.The net result is that, unless you are experienced at spotting collusion, it will deceive you--it is perhaps the most effective diabolical lying strategy being employed against us.It is simply organized lying to accomplish a larger goal.
Once they have come to the reveal, then collusion has everyone in its infernal grip. Of course it is Aunt Hilda making all the ruckus...they even have an independent artist sketch of her! And by then it is impossible to accurately identify the true culprits (demons) because, unless it serves some purpose to self--reveal their demonic identity, then they will conceal it most of the time.
BTW, it was sad that, starting from herself (not dependent upon divine revelation) Amy came to the conclusion that the folks should move because she had no idea who shadow people were--only that they were powerful and dangerous--and she had no success in getting rid of them. The reality is these shadow entities are demonic, and are quite common, contrary to what Amy says regarding their rarity.
In closing, my advice is to keep your eyes open to the potential of demonic collusion, so that we might be equipped to effectively overcome our Adversary.
Addendum--one strong piece of evidence of the reliability of the eyewitness accounts of the gospels is the manifestly obvious lack of any collusion between Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

Phenomenology vs. Biblical Reality
By Reverend Mark Hunnemann
Have you noticed that paranormal seminars are called "Phenomenology"?Why are they called that and what does it mean? I remember studying phenomenology in college as a philosophy major. It is a modern school of philosophy started by Edmund Husserl. He attempted to develop a universal philosophic method, devoid of presuppositions, by examining and describing our experience of phenomena. Frankly, though it has become fashionable to speak of the phenomenology of this or that, no two people can agree on a proper definition! Please Google it and discover this wonderment for yourself!
I will go on record and say that the way it (phenomenology) is meant in paranormal seminars is that it simply means the study of our experience of phenomena (in this case, paranormal phenomena). Another way of stating it is that of a radical empiricism. By that I mean, conclusions are deduced from experiences using the five senses AND our intuition. What a paranormal phenomenon looks, feels, tastes, smells, and sounds like will determine what the nature of the phenomena IS. Emphasis is on APPEARANCE in dictating ontology (the nature of being) as we proceed, I will contrast this method with what I call biblical realism. The differences are profound and lead to entirely different conclusions regarding the phenomena. I want to enliven this analysis by using a case study from a recent episode of the Dead Files. We shall see that the same basic flawed phenomenological presupposition is shared by paranormal seminars and the two principles on this TV show…perception equals reality. A thousand times—NO!
Last week’s Dead Files hit close to home…literally. This episode took place in a small town called Browns Summit, which is perhaps five miles from my hometown of Greensboro, NC. I want to re-tell the story and accent issues along the way. As usual, the medium Amy, her assistant husband, and Steve (retired NYC homicide detective) do their various walk-throughs of the location. From the outset, Steve indicates this is one of the most difficult cases ever. The parents and their two daughters are experiencing severely oppressive paranormal activity.
One daughter, we are told, has had 14 brain surgeries in the last few years. This has significantly reduced her ability to function normally. What was visibly moving to Steve (and me) was how viciously a special needs daughter was being singled out—she was being clawed on her skin, and seeing/hearing monstrous phenomena. Over time, she had regressed from a happy young lady to where she was muttering that she wanted to die. At one point in the show, you could actually hear her sobbing in the background…it was horrible. It did not, and does not seem fair—but such is demonic reality (jumping ahead).
The whole family is experiencing paranormal activity, but as is often the case, one person (usually the weakest) was being relentlessly hammered. They could not afford to move, but something had to change NOW. They were desperate for help, which is why they had called the producers. This was no “I Am Six” shameless parental attention grabbing. It does make me wonder, yet again, why a local pastor was not handling the case.
As has become the hallmark of this TV show, there was remarkable agreement between Amy and Steve as they conducted their separate investigations. Due to a tragic train wreck early in 20th century near the home, as well as the deaths of two children on the property, it was posited that these deceased humans were the causal agents of the oppression.
Let me try to personalize or apply this—have you ever determined that a paranormal entity or activity was benevolent based on your perception or subjective feelings? If you have, then you are engaging in phenomenology. Your starting point for determining the identity of paranormal phenomena lies within you, and is based on your perception. Is that appropriate for a Christian? As followers or disciples of the Lord Jesus, we are called to a life of radical submission to Him in all areas of life. We do this primarily by conforming our mind, attitude, and behavior to the authority of scripture--and not our autonomous reason or subjective states. (Rom.12:1ff)
It makes want to weep every time a person tells me that they “know” that the presence in their home is benevolent. Do we not realize that demons can not only project thoughts into our heads, but also feelings? That which is pure evil can make itself look and feel as if it were perfect love. And yet I hear this frequently: “Some entities in my home are evil, but I know this particular entity is benevolent because of how it acts and makes me feel.” Do you remember from last week how Laura Maxwell described how her “deceased sister” had gently brushed her hair on a nightly basis for years? But when she and her mom decided to leave Spiritualism, then the alleged sister, and other deceased family members, suddenly turned on them and revealed their true, demonic nature. Rebuke your benevolent paranormal friend in the name of Jesus (do it with conviction), and see what happens. This is where empirical verifiability is appropriate, and it WILL reveal realty. The bible is the most realistic book in existence because, when we read it, we are seeing phenomena through God’s eyes….the Creator and sustainer of all phenomena. (Col.1:16-17)
Meanwhile, back on DF, the mentally handicapped daughter is said to be in process of being possessed. While walking the grounds at night, Amy encounters what she considers is the primary culprit…for possessing the daughter. She asserts that she does not know what it is because it looks and feels different from anything she has encountered thus far in her life. However, she describes the entity as being a large black dog, which quickly begins to shape-shift into a large, dark humanoid shape, which is leaning against a tree. Amy says that it is extremely territorial and that she is afraid of it. During the reveal, she says it is that horrible entity that has been entering the handicapped girl’s room.
As is often the case, even when a possible demonic entity like this has been identified, there are other beings she sees which are innocent. In this case, she sees a young boy and girl—which perfectly matches the research Steve had done regarding untimely deaths on the property. Previously, the mom had told Steve that she was being awakened at night and seeing impressions being made on her bed, and this frightened her. Well, that was the little kids playing on the bed, says Amy… nothing to be frightened about.
She says the girl may need an exorcism, but since that is traumatic, she recommends first using black salt and some powder blessed by Wiccans (there was a third ritual but I cannot remember). This girls life is in danger, and the reveal is the most somber I have ever witnessed on TV. It is obvious, to me anyway; that both Amy and Steve are deeply touched by this young lady’s plight…they seem very sincere.
However, it is possible to be sincere, but sincerely wrong. First, you CANNOT get rid of demons by using occult rituals—like the burning of sage, black powder, Wiccan powder and so on. If this young woman survives, it is only because the demonic are humoring their attempts—in order to further validate the deception. If you are a disciple of Jesus, then you must get rid of occult paraphernalia…not use it to exorcise someone or some place.
Second, this is clear illustration of my thesis: phenomenology vs biblical realism. The former is incredibly naïve and foolish. What madness has come over us that makes us think that, how we function in the science lab, is transferable to the supernatural realm? Are we submitting to the Lordship of Christ or not? Making distinctions between benevolent and malevolent entities based on our perception is foolish. Using our five senses, as well as our intuition, is not a wise way to discern supernatural evil. Why? Because demons can project thoughts and sensations that will pleasantly (and deceptively) overwhelm all of these. GOD’S WORD is the only reliable source of information regarding the identity of these entities. I have said before that observation can yield some data, but it cannot reveal the identity of paranormal phenomena. IT CANNOT….IT IS UNABLE TO.
Please see that this is an immensely practical issue that millions of Americans are dealing with. It breaks my heart when folks tell me they are certain that the apparition in their bedroom is benevolent. All that glitters is not gold in the paranormal realm. Remember, the spirit realm is the God ordained temporary home for Satan and millions of demons (maybe billions). All genuine paranormal activity is linked to the spirit realm. I can assure you that no family member is standing guard in your bedroom at night. They are either in heaven or hell, and cannot come here.
Perception is often your worst enemy when it comes to the paranormal because it is teeming with master deceivers. Perception or reality (as defined by God)…which will we choose? Recently, an apparent demonic attempt on the life of my girlfriend occurred. This attempted murder has only further emboldened me to wrench back from the enemy that which belongs to God. To do that, we must walk humbly before our Lord…praying continually and relying on His all-sufficient word.

A Display of Demonic Variety...Dead Files vs Ghost Adventures
By Reverend Mark Hunnemann
I have written on the Ghost Adventures....I have written on the Dead Files....and I have written on Paul's injunction that we must not be ignorant of Satan's schemes. I'm going to pull these various threads together, and hopefully, light will emerge!
The tactics regarding how warfare is waged, including change of the color of uniforms, occurred between Vietnam and the subsequent wars waged in desert/urban environments. A strategy/uniform designed for jungle warfare won't work for battle in Afghanistan or Iraq. What is true in human warfare has many parallels in spiritual warfare. That is where the Dead Files and the Ghost Adventures come into play.
I have not taken any notes, so this "off the top"..however, I have been thinking about this issue for some time--especially the comparison/contrast between these two top ranked paranormal shows.
Let me begin by asking a question: why is there virtually no discernible supernatural activity on the Dead Files, while every week there IS observable/verifiable supernatural activity on the GA?
First, let me address the extremist position, especially those who dismiss all activity on any of these shows as bogus. You are wrong sir/ma'am, and while we must not be gullible, we certainly must not be cynical--the biblical worldview is supernatural, including evil supernaturalism. I remember a conversation I had with a fellow Presbyterian minister who dismissed all these displays of demonic activity as fake after watching a couple of shows. I could not disagree more. They are out of touch with what is happening in our culture recently.
I have seen almost every episode of The Dead Files, and there is never any observable supernatural activity, despite the claims from Amy Allan that there are usually many dead people/demons/shadow people etc present at the location. Amy claims to be a physical medium--meaning she allegedly sees and converses with the dead. Yet her and her cameraman husband never seem to record what she says she is seeing. What makes the show seem so compelling is the correspondence between her observations and partner ex-homicide detective Steve Di Schiavi's findings...they are a mirror image of each other. Whatever she sees, he somehow comes up with an historical precedent which explains it. It is almost as if something was guiding him to unwittingly corroborate Amy's findings. BUT, the sensationalism is somewhat muted(well, except for when she gets "jumped"), just two people working independently, coming to the same conclusion--often in a very astonishing fashion. It is simply TOO amazing how consistently his findings are "spot on" with hers, and vice versa. Many people have moved away from the biblical position as a result of the uncanny correspondence between their "independent research". I put quotation marks there because I believe Satan is guiding their research to correspond.
On the other hand, the Ghost Adventures Crew (again, I have seen almost every episode) have no physical medium, but they have a plethora of the latest and greatest in paranormal observation gear. In addition, it needs to be said that they will do almost anything to stir up activity--using witches, mediums, Ouija boards, voodoo, etc. Unlike the Dead Files, they always have some kind of evidence of the supernatural. For example, it interests me how often an odd shaped orb precedes a supernatural "happening" (footsteps, bangs, EVP and so on) It is as if the demonic are putting on a show to deceive the non-discerning. Some sensational evidence is almost always found by them. It seems that the demonic delight in displaying themselves overtly on this show, but covertly on DF. Both groups are equally disobeying God's holy law re necromancy, but the GAC is inundated with all kinds of experiences. Why?
ALWAYS.....NEVER....ALWAYS.....NEVER.....ALWAYS...NEVER. For the discerning their is a pattern.
I doubt Amy approves of how the GAC does their research, and vice versa, but they both come to the same conclusion--leading people astray re evil supernaturalism.
They wear different "uniforms" and use different tactics but the result is the same--people are led to believe that humans get stuck here after death, and massive confusion is introduced re what happens after death, and who populates the spiritual realm.
My objective was not to unravel/expose in detailed fashion either show, but to reveal that Satan has a vested interest in the success of both. That is the main point. Satan, like any good general, will use varying tactics to attack us--especially if they are proving effective.
The Dead Files and The Ghost Adventures are a display of demonic variety in trying to deceive us. We need to be on guard against all the schemes of the Evil One, wearing the full armor of Christ.
"Seeing Ghosts through God's Eyes" (also in a Kindle edition)...please consider purchasing my book which uses science, logic, and the bible to analyze the true source of power behind paranormal activity.

Obsession on the Dead Files
By Reverend Mark Hunnemann
Recently on the Dead Files there was a family that owns two houses--one is infested and the other is beach front....famed Malibu Beach. The family is being torn apart due to the mother's obsession with the haunted residence. Both the mother and Amy Allan believe the former is reincarnated, which allegedly explains why the many ghosts are drawn to her--they knew her in a previous lifetime. Sheesh....
For a Christian, the notion of reincarnation is antithetical to grace, but many Christians are not grounded in their faith....so they believe in both.
My point is not to dismantle reincarnation--although it is more evidence of how misguided Amy is--but to simply accent a very common phenomenon, diabolical obsession. I have talked to former paranormal investigators who spent hours and hours listening to the same EVP....or bought equipment their family could not afford....or went to places over and over. Families are being destroyed.
We have spent a couple of weeks discussing the importance of critical thinking, and certainly one of the casualties of diabolical obsession is one's ability to think clearly--often with tragic results.
The wife/mother mentioned on the Dead Files, unlike many who are stuck at their infested residence, could choose to move back to luxury at Malibu Beach. BUT, there is this thing called "obsession". Once a house is infested, the desire of the demonic is to break people down--physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Causing people to obsess on this or that usually elicits severe tension in the family. In this case, one daughter had already left. I could see the husband's love for his bride, but the pain was also obvious when she made it plain at the reveal she was choosing the house over her husband and daughters.
What is happening? The more people become fascinated with demonic activity, then the worse the demonic activity gets....and the worse it gets---horrible, vicious cycle. It easy to get over-awed by a child levitating, but what about OBSESSION? In a million different ways, individuals and families are being destroyed by day-in, day-out fixation...strategically planned and guided by the demonic.
Are you or someone you know having their humanity chiseled away due to obsession? Not all obsession is demonic, but much is. Because it is not as sensational as plates flying or children floating, much diabolical obsession is not getting the loving attention it needs.
Dealing with obsession is not easy, but we must plead the blood Jesus

The Destruction of the Canaanites & Paranormal Activity/Beliefs
By Reverend Mark Hunnemann

The Dead Files Q & A and Other Miscellaneous Musings
By Reverend Mark Hunnemann
"For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war
according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but
have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty
opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to
obey Christ." (2 Corinthians 10:3-6)
"....so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we
are not ignorant of his schemes." (2 Corinthians 2:11)
"...for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of
light." (2 Corinthians 11:14)
Last Friday night there was a special Dead Files in which
Steve (ex homicide detective in NYC) and Amy (physical medium) met with the
producer and answered fan questions. It was enlightening. The reason I
reference the Dead Files so much is because, in my opinion, they have raised
the bar on how effective demonic collusion has become in deceiving people.
Amongst some Christians, I have noticed an across-the-board dismissal of
paranormal TV shows. I dislike the para-celeb nonsense as much as anybody, but
I remember vividly how much I struggled in the beginning with how to deal with
the attention to historical detail, and how it lined up with current
apparitional appearances in certain locations. It was only when I stumbled upon
the reality of demonic collusion, that I was able to find cognitive rest in my
biblical beliefs. PLEASE, let us never, forget how horribly persuasive this
deception is, and our need to address it. So, this blog is miscellaneous
musings re: popular culture and the demonic.
1.
Amy mentioned that a particularly difficult case
involved a man named Moses, who is currently incarcerated for murdering a man
on the premises that Amy and Steve investigated. While he was in prison, she
was giving a description of Moses to a sketch artist, but Amy nervously said
Moses was in the room with them--threatening them. We talked about soul
fragmentation, before and after death, last time. Well, here is a man who
literally was in two places at the same time! (in prison and in the room with
her and the sketch artist) How in the world can this occur? Does 50% of his
soul remain in prison, while the other 50% fragments off and flies to this
other location? Make no mistake, Amy said he was REALLY THERE....so much so,
that she was extremely frightened. I ask: is it not so much simpler to say that
a demon was present in the room with her and mimicking his (Moses)
identity? It certainly is more plausible
than what she said was occurring. And the bible sees the soul as being
indivisible--incapable of being "spliced and diced", due to God's
protection. (the soul is not intrinsically immortal, as the Greeks thought)
However, this is why I am so insistent on the importance of worldview presuppositions,
because, given her mistaken view of ultimate reality, then Moses' dual,
fragmented presence makes sense to her, and millions of others viewing reality
through distorted worldview glasses.
2. I rarely do this, but please seriously consider reading my
book because I go into considerable detail re what a worldview presupposition
is, how worldviews are formed, and how comprehensively they drive how we think,
act, and feel. Like an iceberg where most of the mass lies hidden beneath the
water line, so also our worldviews are beneath the water line of our conscious
thought, but they have a profound effect on how we view the paranormal, and all
of reality. One rarely gets past first base when discussing the evidence alone
because we do not realize how different worldview "glasses" will
radically effect how one sees the data.
3.
This clearly shows that the most psychically
"advanced" are often the most deceived. Starting with the wrong
presupposition, will get you further from reality the longer you pursue it. But
this is an obvious example of soul fragmentation belief, which is being watched
by millions, and shaping their worldviews.
What I think has happened is that a template of psychiatric
pathology (e.g. Schizophrenia) has been applied to paranormal phenomenon.
4.
I found it tragic to hear Amy say that most physical
mediums die young, (and this is crucial) "because of their having the dead
constantly entering inside them." They are dying young, but it is because
of having pure evil (demons) enter them frequently. For some reason the heart
is usually targeted. Being indwelt by such horrendous darkness and filth is
going to pollute and damage the heart (physical and non-physical), as well as
causing all kinds of other diseases and illnesses. To be fair, many legitimate
exorcists, have made the same claim re their health (see "Hostage to the
Devil" by Malachi Martin).
Along those lines, one of my concerns is that we become
jaded to the true horror that is occurring on the TV screen. For example, last
week was the first time (I think) that Amy had to leave a location because of
being "jumped". That is the term she uses when, as a physical medium,
she allows a "dead person" to enter her so she can see and feel how
things "went down" when this person died. And when she is done or
finished with their "tour", then Amy will oust them. However, on this
occasion. Amy said it would not leave until some six hours later after they had
driven home. My point is this--millions of folks are watching a woman being
possessed, partially or otherwise, for a period of time. Of course, having the
"dead person" enter the physical medium is precisely what they are
all about. But, God forbid that we ever become numbed to seeing a person being
demonically indwelt. By the way, this is one reason I ALWAYS pray for
protection before and during my viewing of paranormal shows/movies. You should
too.....ALWAYS.. It deeply disturbs me in two ways: first, the person being
possessed is being indwelt by pure evil, and will quite likely not live to see
forty (unless they are fakes).. Second, to watch Amy gesticulate or writhe in
pain is hardly something a Christian should find entertaining....she is
unwittingly being duped and partially possessed by diabolical entities, who
would just as soon kill her.. Do not let your cynicism due to widespread
fakery, blind you to instances of when demonic forces show up for prime time.
Would you expect anything less of them in their lust for power and expansion of
the kingdom of darkness? For Satan to not use TV as a means of wowing folks
with demonic signs and wonders would be stupid of him (strategically
speaking)....and Satan is many things, but he is not stupid. The weakest, most
feeble-minded demon can run circles around the strongest and most intelligent
human, operating in the flesh. Cynicism will cause one to assume any
psychic/medium is guilty until proven otherwise. Real demonic activity will be dismissed
as fakery, which does not help anyone.
Discernment is one thing (and very much
needed these days), but cynicism causes us to become myopic--it is a fine line,
isn't it?
While on the subject of debunking, just because we can show
an alternate explanation for why an alleged claim took place, it does not
follow that we have debunked it. I fear that much, real demonic activity is being
dismissed simply due to being able to visualize how it MIGHT have occurred
naturally.
5.
Which leads me to my next point: is it proper for
Christians to research the occult? Many
say no, and I understand their concerns. One person said that it was akin to
watching pornography. I believe this is an inappropriate analogy and will argue
that SOME folks must keep abreast of cutting edge developments in the
occult/paranormal. The pornography analogy seems persuasive because we know
that looking at pornographic material is harmful and wrong. My problem with
this analogy is that viewing porn is a visual sin--just looking at a centerfold
is defiling of the mind and sinful. But watching a TV show or reading occultic
primary sources is not necessarily defiling. It can be (i.e. defiling),
but not necessarily, as pornography is necessarily defiling. Jesus tells us
that we are to be in the world, but not of the world. Biblical writers show
considerable knowledge of their cultures and there are numerous quotes from
pagan sources in the bible.
My question to those who would prohibit any study of the
occult is this: how can we effectively refute that which we do not understand?
Does not Paul's assertion that we are to destroy strongholds and arguments (2
Corinthians 10:3-6) imply a prior knowledge of that which we systematically
dismantle? Did not Paul have to study and understand an aberrant
belief/argument in order to competently "destroy" it? One could say
that it is a matter of compassion when we care enough about others that we take
the time and effort to carefully study what they believe. If we have a friend
who is a witch, will she not be rightly upset with us if assume she is a
Satanist, or even that all witches are Wiccans (which they definitely are not)?
Moreover, such ignorance insures the triumph of evil because we will have no
way to oppose it.
The great apologists of the early church (first 4
centuries)--Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Iranaues, Augustine, etc, were used of
God to destroy numerous heresies that threatened the very existence of the
church. In fact, Gnosticism was rampant, inside and outside the church, but was
so effectively challenged by Iranaeus and others that it withered away....UNTIL
1,500 years later it oddly re-emerged 30 years ago. However, (and this is key),
one of the main reasons these early apologists were so effective is that they
thoroughly studied that which they attacked. It is through their writings that
we get most of our understanding of what the great heretics believed. And so
down through the centuries, God has protected His Bride from doctrines of
demons by raising up men who studied the primary sources (no doubt,
prayerfully) For the glory of God, and out of compassion for the lost, some of
us must focus on this task. Certainly, all Christians should be able to defend
their faith and give a reason for the hope that we have. (1 Peter 3:15).
Let me hasten to add, in-depth study of heretical beliefs is
a call from God for a few That is where my calling lies, and my seminary
training has been invaluable. And so I intend on joining the Rhine Institute so
that I can read all the material from decades of parapsychology research. I
find deep satisfaction in this.....and that is a sign that we are tapping into
God's call for us.
It also needs to be said that every Christian must pray
before and during exposure to occultic studies. In addition, if a person is
spiritually sensitive, or if they have a history of demonic
oppression/possession, then they likely need to avoid watching or reading
anything occult related. As an alcoholic needs to avoid that which others have
liberty to use appropriately, if they wish, so also those addicted to the
paranormal (many are very obsessive re evidence analysis), will need to
abstain. However, God has sovereingly used folks formerly in cults/occult to
have ministries to folks who are enslaved to these same beliefs. Bottom line,
it is person-specific, but we do need to err on the side of caution. We who do
study the occult must keep our guards up, and walk humbly before our God.

What is Demonic Collusion?
By Reverend Mark Hunnemann
"...so that we might not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs." (2 Corinthians 2:11)
My forte is not that of an investigative reporter, in which Amy's credentials are put under scrutiny.

Reverend Mark Hunnemann's Ramblings...
By Reverend Mark Hunnemann
Well, Ghost Hunters is ten years old! I can get cynical about paranormal TV shows as well, but I intend on continuing watching them. But analyzing current trends in the paranormal is my calling, but it may not be yours (we all have different specific callings from God)...though to some extent we all need to stay culturally aware.
Whether we like it or not, many folks are newly acquiring (or sustaining) fascination with the spirit realm due to these TV shows. Hence, some folks need to keep in the loop. I watched "Ghost Hunters" and the "Dead Files" last Friday, and I'm glad I did--and the new "Ghost Hunters" tonight. Even if we have discussed this before, it doesn't hurt to return to basics every now and then. This blog will be a bit different--a string of observations re various topics. "Lord, I was born a rambling man..." (Allman Bros).
Tonight I noted for the umpteenth time that the primary desire of "Ghost Hunters" seems to be to "put the clients minds at rest".Have you noticed that, putting the clients minds at ease, is what Jay/Grant/Steve discuss in the van after every reveal? Blatantly downplaying serious events, like receiving a long triple-scratch down his forearm, all the data was orchestrated at the reveal to diminish any potential danger and focus on relieving the client of any emotional distress. God forbid that parents should be anxiety-ridden due to demonic attacks on the children. Anybody with eyes to see, should be able to see that objectivity is not high on their list of priorities. The net result is that the glowing clients are in worse shape after their investigation than before. At least before, they had natural fear arising from a clearly hostile environment. But honed from years of experience, Hawes and crew can make the most "hostile haunt" appear to be an innocuous and exciting live-in arrangement with"living history." Afterwards they are often made to feel grateful for the demonic presence. What percentage of investigative crews have been bitten by this sentimentalism bug?
That certainly is not the case with the "Dead Files". To their credit, Steve and Amy do not sugar coat things at the reveal. More often than not, they present their clients with brutal realities. However, one thing I have learned is that usually the most spiritually sensitive are prone to being the most thoroughly deceived. They have become too confident in their autonomous (not subject to God or His Word) usage of their extraordinary abilities. In Amy's case, she has her spirit guides leading her through this veritable zoo of demonic entities presenting themselves in forms which reinforce her terribly mistaken view of the spirit realm.Once in a while she will actually finger a demon, and call for a proper exorcism. More often than not, their candor does not make up for her occultic solutions to occultic problems.
Real demonic "signs and wonders" are often seen/heard on these shows...and the electrifying connection they have with spiritually starved seekers cannot be over-exaggerated.
"Wanted.. a man who can smile and laugh alot and make my eyes go wide open . Need a happy person in my life"
(This is an actual quote off of a profile on Match.com.) I mentioned recently that I had taken the plunge awhile back and tried online dating. Reading the profiles reveal much of what makes each person tick. Over....and over....and over again, the common motif for what these folks were looking for was laughter and fun. Of course they were looking for other traits like honesty (even if it is common knowledge that most people lie about their age, and insert dated pics) communication, outdoorsy, and so on. But this is what really struck me-- 95 % checked the box that their faith was "Christian". However, in the 2 part-main section where you summarize WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU ARE LIKE, AND WHAT YOU ARE PRIMARILY LOOKING FOR IN A POTENTIAL SPOUSE, 95% of these professing Christians never mention a thing about their own faith, nor that of their potential match. When given the opportunity to explicitly communicate the essence of who they were, and the core values/traits desirable to them in a match, their "faith" was null and void....conspicuous by its absence. There is a pronounced lack of spiritual reality expressed in these profiles. There is no such thing as a "shallow person" because of being made in God's image, but we can sure adopt shallow values, which cannot satisfy.
One thing we get confused about is the difference between faith being personal and it being private. Our faith is intensely personal--a personal relationship with the Living God through Jesus Christ...an intimate walk with Him, like Enoch. But God never intended for us to keep our faith private, as if it were some private compartment of our life...some secretive, quiet area we are silent about. No, both in actions and words, we are to be witnesses for Him. To some extent, I think that lies behind the reason why so many professing Christians don't "put it out there"....to them, it is a matter between them and God.But from my experience, the more we make our faith private, the less personal it becomes..That is, the more we keep it to ourselves, the more "it" shrivels.
These are people (watching the TV shows and on dating sites) made in God's image and not mere statistics--so, it makes me weep to sense their spiritual bankruptcy. Why do I mention all this? They have deluded themselves that they are happier than they really are....and spiritual emptiness makes them ripe for demonic deception. These are the kind of folks who are watching the paranormal shows or are being exposed to a myriad of other occultic influences. So, again, think of how powerfully electric the connection when they SEE supernatural reality on TV.And how easily deceived due to lack of discernment.
I wonder what percentage of homes with paranormal activity (demonic) choose to simply live with it...due to the magic it brings to their otherwise mundane and spiritually empty lives? Materialism sucks the life out of life.
Another observation is the importance of understanding what a person means when they say, "They are spiritual, but not religious." (the second most popular category checked by folks on Match.com) It can have two opposite definitions, and both are commonly used. First, it means that a person is actually quite serious about their faith in Christ, but they want to make sure it is not equated with legalism (not "religious").They are acutely aware of the personal aspect of faith. That is a definition we can all applaud. Then, there is the second meaning--"I have no use for any form of organized religion, especially not Christianity." For them, the "spiritual" could mean anything or nothing...often some eastern concoction....but definitely jettison the hidden God of Christianity, with its Neanderthal ethics.
Spiritual but not religious says your companion...you may gently ask them to DEFINE!!

Phenomenology vs. Biblical Reality
By
Reverend Mark Hunnemann
Have you noticed that paranormal
seminars are called "Phenomenology"? Why
are they called that and what does
it mean? I remember studying phenomenology in college as a philosophy major. It
is a modern school of philosophy started by Edmund Husserl. He attempted to
develop a universal philosophic method, devoid of presuppositions, by examining
and describing our experience of phenomena. Frankly, though it has become
fashionable to speak of the phenomenology of this or that, no two people can
agree on a proper definition! Please
Google it and discover this wonderment for yourself!
I will go on record and say that
the way it (phenomenology) is meant in paranormal seminars is that it simply
means the study of our experience of phenomena (in this case, paranormal
phenomena). Another way of
stating it is that of a radical empiricism. By that I mean, conclusions are
deduced from experiences using the five senses AND our intuition. What a
paranormal phenomenon looks, feels, tastes, smells, and sounds like will
determine what the nature of the phenomena IS.
Emphasis is on APPEARANCE in dictating ontology (the nature of being) as we
proceed, I will contrast this method with what I call biblical realism. The
differences are profound and lead to entirely different conclusions regarding
the phenomena. I want to enliven this analysis by using a case study from a
recent episode of the Dead Files. We
shall see that the same basic flawed phenomenological presupposition is shared
by paranormal seminars and the two principles on this TV show…perception equals reality. A thousand
times—NO!
Last week’s Dead
Files hit close to home…literally. This episode took place in a small town
called Browns Summit, which is perhaps five miles from my hometown of
Greensboro, NC. I want to re-tell the story and accent issues along the
way. As usual, the medium Amy, her
assistant husband, and Steve (retired NYC homicide detective) do their various
walk-throughs of the location. From the outset, Steve indicates this is one of
the most difficult cases ever. The parents and their two daughters are
experiencing severely oppressive paranormal activity.
One daughter, we are told, has had 14 brain
surgeries in the last few years.
This has significantly reduced her ability to function normally. What was
visibly moving to Steve (and me) was how viciously a special needs daughter was
being singled out—she was being clawed on her skin, and seeing/hearing
monstrous phenomena. Over time, she had regressed from a happy young lady to
where she was muttering that she wanted to die. At one point in the show, you
could actually hear her sobbing in the background…it was horrible. It did not,
and does not seem fair—but such is demonic reality (jumping ahead).
The whole family is experiencing paranormal activity,
but as is often the case, one person (usually the weakest) was being relentlessly
hammered. They could not afford
to move, but something had to change NOW. They were desperate for help, which
is why they had called the producers. This was no “I Am Six” shameless parental
attention grabbing. It does make me wonder, yet again, why a local pastor was
not handling the case.
As has become the hallmark of this TV show, there
was remarkable agreement between Amy and Steve as they conducted their separate
investigations. Due to a tragic
train wreck early in 20th century near the home, as well as the deaths of two
children on the property, it was posited that these deceased humans were the
causal agents of the oppression.
Let me try to personalize or apply this—have you
ever determined that a paranormal entity or activity was benevolent based on
your perception or subjective feelings?
If you have, then you are engaging in phenomenology. Your starting point for
determining the identity of paranormal phenomena lies within you, and is based
on your perception. Is that appropriate for a Christian? As followers or
disciples of the Lord Jesus, we are called to a life of radical submission to
Him in all areas of life. We do this primarily by conforming our mind,
attitude, and behavior to the authority of scripture--and not our autonomous
reason or subjective states. (Rom.12:1ff)
It makes want
to weep every time a person tells me that they “know” that the presence in
their home is benevolent. Do we not
realize that demons can not only project thoughts into our heads, but also
feelings? That which is pure evil can make itself look and feel as if it were
perfect love. And yet I hear this frequently: “Some entities in my home are
evil, but I know this particular entity is benevolent because of how it acts
and makes me feel.” Do you remember from last week how Laura Maxwell described
how her “deceased sister” had gently brushed her hair on a nightly basis for
years? But when she and her mom decided to leave Spiritualism, then the alleged
sister, and other deceased family members, suddenly turned on them and revealed
their true, demonic nature. Rebuke your benevolent paranormal friend in the
name of Jesus (do it with conviction), and see what happens. This is where
empirical verifiability is appropriate, and it WILL reveal realty. The bible is
the most realistic book in existence because, when we read it, we are seeing
phenomena through God’s eyes….the Creator and sustainer of all phenomena.
(Col.1:16-17)
Meanwhile, back on DF, the mentally handicapped
daughter is said to be in process of being possessed. While walking the grounds at night, Amy encounters
what she considers is the primary culprit…for possessing the daughter. She
asserts that she does not know what it is because it looks and feels different
from anything she has encountered thus far in her life. However, she describes
the entity as being a large black dog, which quickly begins to shape-shift into
a large, dark humanoid shape, which is leaning against a tree. Amy says that it
is extremely territorial and that she is afraid of it. During the reveal, she
says it is that horrible entity that has been entering the handicapped girl’s
room.
As is often the case, even when a possible demonic
entity like this has been identified, there are other beings she sees which are
innocent. In this case, she
sees a young boy and girl—which perfectly matches the research Steve had done
regarding untimely deaths on the property. Previously, the mom had told Steve
that she was being awakened at night and seeing impressions being made on her
bed, and this frightened her. Well, that was the little kids playing on the
bed, says Amy… nothing to be frightened about.
She says the girl may need an exorcism, but since
that is traumatic, she recommends first using black salt and some powder
blessed by Wiccans (there was a third ritual but I cannot remember). This girls life is in danger, and the reveal is the
most somber I have ever witnessed on TV. It is obvious, to me anyway; that both
Amy and Steve are deeply touched by this young lady’s plight…they seem very
sincere.
However, it is possible to be sincere, but sincerely
wrong. First, you CANNOT get
rid of demons by using occult rituals—like the burning of sage, black powder, Wiccan
powder and so on. If this young woman survives, it is only because the demonic
are humoring their attempts—in order to further validate the deception. If you
are a disciple of Jesus, then you must get rid of occult paraphernalia…not use
it to exorcise someone or some place.
Second, this is clear illustration of my thesis:
phenomenology vs biblical realism. The
former is incredibly naïve and foolish. What madness has come over us that
makes us think that, how we function in the science lab, is transferable to the
supernatural realm? Are we submitting to the Lordship of Christ or not? Making
distinctions between benevolent and malevolent entities based on our perception
is foolish. Using our five senses, as well as our intuition, is not a wise way
to discern supernatural evil. Why? Because demons can project thoughts and
sensations that will pleasantly (and deceptively) overwhelm all of these. GOD’S
WORD is the only reliable source of information regarding the identity of these
entities. I have said before that observation can yield some data, but it
cannot reveal the identity of paranormal phenomena. IT CANNOT….IT IS UNABLE TO.
Please see that this is an immensely practical issue
that millions of Americans are dealing with.
It breaks my heart when folks tell me they are certain that the apparition in
their bedroom is benevolent. All that glitters is not gold in the paranormal
realm. Remember, the spirit realm is the God ordained temporary home for Satan
and millions of demons (maybe billions). All genuine paranormal activity is
linked to the spirit realm. I can assure you that no family member is standing
guard in your bedroom at night. They are either in heaven or hell, and cannot
come here.
Perception
is often your worst enemy when it comes to the paranormal because it is teeming
with master deceivers. Perception or reality (as defined by God)…which will
we choose? Recently, an apparent demonic attempt on the life of my girlfriend
occurred. This attempted murder has only further emboldened me to wrench back
from the enemy that which belongs to God. To do that, we must walk humbly
before our Lord…praying continually and relying on His all-sufficient word.
