Thinking Globally: A Universal Task

By the Dalai Lama
Scientific predictions of environmental change are difficult for ordinary human beings to comprehend fully. We hear about hot temperatures and rising sea levels, increasing cancer rates, vast population growth, depletion of resources, and extinction of species. Human activity everywhere is hastening to destroy key elements of the natural eco-systems all living beings depend on.

These threatening developments are individually drastic and together amazing. The world's population has tripled in this century alone and is expected to double or triple in the next. The global economy may grow by a factor of five or ten including with it extreme rates of energy consumption, carbon dioxide production, and deforestation. It is hard to imagine all things actually happening in our lifetime and in the lives of our children. We have to consider the prospects of global suffering and environmental degradation unlike anything in human history.

I think, however, there is good news in that now we will definitely have to find new ways to survive together on this planet. In this century we have seen enough war, poverty, pollution, and suffering. According to Buddhist teaching, such things happen as the result of ignorance and selfish actions, because we often fail to see the essential common relation of all beings. The earth is showing us warnings and clear indications of the vast effects and negative potential of misdirected human behavior.

To counteract these harmful practices we can teach ourselves to be more aware of our own mutual dependence. Every sentient being wants happiness instead of pain. So we share a common basic feeling. We can develop right action to help the earth and each other based on a better motivation. Therefore, I always speak of the importance of developing a genuine sense of universal responsibility. When we are motivated by wisdom and compassion, the results of our actions benefit everyone, not just our individual selves or some immediate convenience. When we are able to recognize and forgive ignorant actions of the past, we gain the strength to constructively solve the problems of the present.

We should extend this attitude to be concerned for our whole environment. As a basic principle, I think it is better to help if you can, and if you cannot help, at least try not to do harm. This is an especially suitable guide when there is so much yet to understand about the complex interrelations of diverse and unique eco-systems. The earth is our home and our mother. We need to respect and take care of her. This is easy to understand today.

We need knowledge to care for ourselves, every part of the Earth and the life upon it, and all of the future generations as well. This means that education about the environment is of great importance to everyone. Scientific learning and technological progress are essential for improving the quality of life in the modern world. Still more important is the simple practice of getting to know and better appreciate our natural surroundings, and ourselves whether we are children or adults. If we have a true appreciation for others and resist acting out of ignorance we will take care of the Earth.

In the biggest sense, environmental education means learning to maintain a balanced way of life. All religions agree that we cannot find lasting inner satisfaction based on selfish desires and acquiring the comforts of the material things. Even if we could, there are now so many people that the earth would not sustain us for long. I think it is much better to practice enjoying simple peace of mind. We can share the earth and take care of it together, rather than trying ro possess it, destroying the beauty of life in the process.

Ancient cultures that have adapted to their natural surroundings can offer special insights on structuring human societies to exist in balance with the environment. For example, Tibetans are uniquely familiar with life on the Himalayan Plateau. This has evolved into a long history of a civilization that took care not to overwhelm and destroy its fragile eco-system. Tibetans have long appreciated the presence of wild animals as symbolic of freedom. A deep reverence for nature is apparent in much of Tibetan art and ceremony. Spiritual development thrived despite limited material progress. Just as species may not adapt to relatively sudden environmental changes, human cultures also need to be treated with special care to ensure survival. Therefore, learning about the useful ways of people and preserving their cultural heritage is also a part of learning to care for the environment.

I try always to express the value of having a good heart. This simple aspect of human nature can be nourished to great power. With a good heart and wisdom you have right motivation and will automatically do what needs to be done. If people begin to act with genuine compassion for every one, we can still protect each other and the natural environment. This is much easier than having to adapt to the severe and incomprehensible environmental conditions projected for the future.

Now on a close examination, the human mind, the human heart, and the environment are inseparably linked together. In this sense, environmental education helps to generate both the understanding and love we need to create the best opportunity there has ever been for peace and lasting coexistence.

God In the Hands of Angry Sinners...Or Why Is Christianity So Narrow?

By Rev. Mark Hunnemann

Chris- "Good morning!"
Bill- "Hey Chris!...uhh, where are we?"
Chris-"In a computer! Wanna know how we got here?"
Bill- "Nope...just happy to see you again. You are patient with my questions. This has been on my mind since last time...umm."
Chris- "Why are you hesistant my friend; usually you just ask away?...which I admire about you...you really seem to be an honest seeker of truth."
Bill- "Thanks man...I DO want to know the truth, but the more we talk about it, there is something bothering me. I see that since Jesus claimed to be God, I can't just act like He is merely another good man. But I just don't like the exclusive claims bit."
Chris- "You mean, like where Jesus said, ":I am the way, the truth, and the life; nobody comes to the Father but through Me."?"
Bill- "Yea, that's it. Please don't get mad at me, but why is He so narrow? You showed me last time it was Jesus, and not you Christians, who created the narrowness. You are just following what He said. Sooo...why is your loving God so intolerant. There..I said it."
Chris- "And I'm glad you did, and no, I'm not angry at all. It is a question alot of people have. Can I tell you a story?"
Bill- "We're in a computer Chris, remember? You can do whatever you want...but sure, if you think it will answer my question"
Chris- "Haha, you're right! This is an Imagine story. Sit back, close your eyes, my friend, and imagine this...."
Bill- "Hold on a minute; you're not getting New Agey on me, are you?"
Chris-"Hehehehe...naw man! God created the imagination...it is....holy.We can talk about biblical meditation another time...

Imagine there existed for all eternity a self-existent and eternal God. He is perfectly happy and perfectly holy. Since He is a Trinity of Persons He never gets lonely; infinite devotion and delight in each other..lots and lots of laughter! Imagine one day, they freely decide to create; not because they were lonely, but because they simply wanted to. Kind of like the guy writning this; he didn't have to.write....he simply and freely decided to do so. Anyway, He created the moon and countless stars, animals, fish-everything. Then this God made man in His image..His highest creation--even higher than the angels. He placed a man and woman in a perfect, lush garden. The lovliest garden imaginable, with every kind of tasty vegetable food. And when He was finished, this self-existent God was excited! He said it was all very good!

Then imagine He says to the man and woman. "You are the apple of my eye.I love you as much as I love the Father and Holy Spirit. You are to mirror to the cows, dogs, and my other creatures what I am like...mirror my love and holiness to them." He further tells them they are perfect and the garden they live in is perfect. And it was.....a theatre of beauty. Then God tells them that His desire is to walk in close fellowship with them. They have everything!

Imagine this God says to them, "All of this is yours...all these pleasures--enjoy them and each other. The only thing I ask is that you not eat from plant # 3,890,216...all the other 3,890,215 are yours to eat, but if you eat from the forbidden fruit, you will immediately die.If you pass this test of your obedience, then you and all your descendants will never die nor any sorrow.

Imagine God does all that. And then imagine that instead of being thankful, they make a bee-line for the forbidden tree and eat. Now, this eternally happy God is sad for the first time...ever. But instead of killing them on the spot as he had said, in His grace God allows them to live a long time.He clothes them, and though they will experience sorrow, He promises that one day a Messiah would come--God would come--and die as a substitue for their sins.Believe in that and you can have your relationship with Him restored. He also promises to mortally wound the serpant that had tempted them.

Now imagine that after God had done all this, most of Adam and Eve's kids, who had heard the gospel, rejected Him. Mankind became so corrupt, evil, and savage that it grieved God;s heart that He had even created us. Except for a small number of believers, most people thought all day long about nothing except for how they could rebel further against God. He sends a flood to destroy everyone, except for one family whose leader was the only person who loved God As times passes this God chooses a certain group of sinful people and tells them that they are going to be special; as God's chosen people they were to believe in the coming Meeiah, and mirror to the surrounding nations the holiness and love of God.Imagine God did all that.

And imagine that God pursued these people like they were His lovers. The self-existent and eternal, and eternally joyous God, mysteriously and freely wraps up His own emotional life and welfare with our welfare. He loves them so much He actually writes to them a love letter, which tells them things they could never had known otherwise. And in His kindness and love He raises up prophets to write down His words of love. He longs for intimate communion with us.

Imagine that, instead of listening to His love letter, they write Him a "Dear John" letter and mock His love, They suppress the knowlege they have for God and they exchange the truth of God for a lie; they worship the creation, instead of the Creator. But imagine that God sends prophets to them again, again,, and again; but one after another, we either beat or killed these prophets. And when people do seek for God, it is usually just for His benefits, and not God Himself. So, imagine that this God says, :"They won;t listen to Me, they won't listen to my prophets, so I will send My only Son--whom I love and take infinite delight in, Surely they will listen to Him."

Imagine now the unimaginable: as God takes on human flesh, He finds Himself in the hands of angry sinners who want to kill God.Imagaine this God/Man teaches and minsters publicly for 3 years. He heals the sick, exorcises demons, and teaches from town to town about God's forgiveness. All of these are convincing proofs which validate His truth claims..But like the prophets before Him, He is rejected and killed...by His own people..by all people. But imagine that God had planned this death from the beginning. God freely chose to save us. He did not have to, but once He freely chose to, there was no other way.

For backwards eternity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit erupted in raucus laughter , love, and infinite devotion. But He is holy, holy, holy...Now, imagaine the Father actually having to savagely punish and kill His only Son. Imagine that every filthy thought, word, and action of guilty sinners were transferred to this infinitely holy Savior; the promised Messiah mentioned in the garden. In His human nature (perfectly united with the Divine), He dies an unimaginably horrible death. This was the most obscene act in human or cosmic history; as the sinless One, became sin, and a living, breathing hell while on the cross.Fellowship in the Trinity was broken, as the Father poured out His unmitigated fury upon His dearly loved Son and beat Him to death.

Imagaine, Bill, a God who did all that. And imagaine further that He promises eternal salvation and forgiveness, eternal love, perfect and uninterrupted happiness, and security....He promises all that and much more...IF ..we will do one simple thing; trust in Jesus, and Him alone, to forgive you of all your sins. If you do that, then you have eternal life."

Chris- "Why are you shaking your head my friend?"
Bill- "Because, after all God has done for us..and.the rejection we have shown to God, He did not OWE us even one way of salvation...right?"
Chris- "Right...."
Bill- "And if He does not owe us any means of being forgiven, then I suppose it is arrogant of me to complain about the arrogance of Christians...or the narrowness of Jesus being kind enough to offer even one way.If God gave us justice or what we deserved, then...Chris...?
Chris- "Yes, Bill...you seem to have finally grasped it. But what is on your mind?"
Bill- "All of these talks...I see now my major mistake was having a deficient view of God; especially His holiness and grace...but without a depth view of His holiness, then grace makes no sense, and the narrrowness makes no sense. I was blind, but now I see! Thank God, in His unfailing love and merciful patience, He has provided the only way. Chris, I will never dare to accuse God or Christians of being narrow again."
Chris- "Amen! I think you are right Bill..Our view of God determines alot of things; salvation being first, but a depth view of God's character, as you aptly put it, goes a long way to answering the ghost debate, but...."
Bill- "But that is for next time...."
Chris-"I reckon...I love you my friend. After all God has done,if we never recieved another blessing from God, if we suffered for the rest of our lives, we would have no right, but to praise God for what he has already done for us.,,,but of course He will continue to lavish His blessings on us through eternity..." Amen

Investigating Paranormal State eBook FREE 3/31/12

TODAY ONLY "Investigating Paranormal State" the eBook is FREE!

"Paranormal State" made its debut on the A&E network in December 2007. This documentary program was comprised of a team of college students from Penn State University who wanted to help those troubled by unexplained phenomena. The Paranormal State/Paranormal Research Society's motto was, "To trust, honor, and always seek the truth." The show starred founder and director Ryan Buell along with his group of technicians, investigators and occult specialists. On most of his investigations he was assisted by such paranormal celebrities as Chip Coffey, Lorraine Warren, Chad Calek, and Michelle Belanger. The team was involved with helping frightened people and collecting evidence of the unexplained.

After five seasons and more than 75 episodes, the rumors of staged scenes, questionable evidence, misleading editing, and dissatisfied clients are explored. As other paranormal programming comes along imitating this style of presentation, it's vital that the problems are investigated.

"Investigating Paranormal State" is the first book to take an independent look inside this paranormal reality TV show. The authors uncover both positive and negative elements. In their quest to reveal the foundation on which this show was built, they unearth some startling secrets. With a step-by-step analysis of every episode, the authors present the facts. They give voice to those present on the set ranging from production staff, former clients, and various para-celebrities.

Authors Kirby Robinson and Lisa Maliga spent countless hours interviewing former clients, production team members, current and former PRS crew members, and various para-celebrities. The reader journeys behind the scenes of this controversial paranormal reality show.

"Investigating Paranormal State" will keep the reader up past Dead Time – not trembling in fear but discovering the truth of paranormal reality.

A Memoriam and Paranormal Christian Update

By Pastor Michael Frisbee

This week has been an incredibly difficult one for me.

This past Monday, a dear friend of mine, whom had been in a four year battle with his local city council, ended his life.  The city council had maneuvered and backed him into a corner, with nowhere to turn or escape, and he perceived he only had two choices; allow them to take everything he loved and owned and see it become just another park for their 2036 plan, or end his life and take out as much as he could when he did.  He went with the latter.

His lawyer was at the District courthouse in Atlanta, trying desperately to see a judge to secure an injunction against the city and the man that bought my friend’s mortgage in order to force him out of his 12 year home thus buying some time to prove the city and associates maliciously used various loop holes and purposely refused to assist in getting my friend FEMA help when he distinctly qualified after his home had been flooded 4 times in 3 years, because the city refused to fix the water drainage issues from over building.  The city and Marshall’s service moved fast Monday morning to physically remove my friend before his lawyer could get the injunction.

He refused to leave his barricaded home, argued with them for two hours to buy time for his lawyer, but they were preparing to come in with force.  So he told them to get off his property or he was going to start firing on them (it was known he had a large cache of legally owned and registered firearms and pistols).  They backed off, and at 12:44 pm, as soon as the last man cleared the property at a safe distance, the house exploded.  He had poured gasoline throughout the house, and at that moment – lit it.  His body was later found in the home, and identified.

I met Andrew in 2009, when I started my campaign for Congress on a Constitutionist platform.  Though he was not in my Congressional District, he supported what I stood for as a patriot, and helped me with man power, finances, and the occasional loan of his antique Mercedes Benz for Congressional events.  We would talk long and often by phone and online about where this country is heading, what needs to be done to turn it around, etc.

He had a great love for animals as well, and simple living.  It was his animals that led to his legal fight with the city council.  When the city annexed his neighborhood from the county, he and his animals were grandfathered in.  However, someone related to a member of the city council moved in next door, and thus began the constant complaints over his chickens.  They tried to fine him, he fought it, and won.  Then they tried to use all kinds of regulations and such that were rather obscure, and each time, he defeated them in court.  His last battle on that issue came when they passed a new law restricting barn yard animals.  They tried using it against him – and the judge laughed them out of the court.

Where they got him, was after 3 years of begging them to fix the drainage issues in that area, and having his home flooded a few times, he finally graded his land one storm fall, to keep the flood waters out, and they charged him with illegal grading of his own property.  He was older and of ill health, unable to meet the requirements of community service, and thus – the city moved to have his probation revoked, and he did 99 days in jail.  While in jail, they put a lot of pressure and threats to the elderly woman that held the mortgage he was paying on, and she sold it to a third party associated with members of the city council.  The new mortgage owner, when Andrew was unable to pay his mortgage because he was in jail, immediately began foreclosure proceedings.

He was fighting that foreclosure, and in the fourth month of that battle when tragedy struck this past Monday.  I hold the city and all of the associates that were a part of persecuting this man, my friend accountable for his death.  They drove him to such a desperate act.  Today, at 10:30 am EST, I and well over 200 expected friends, family and associates will lay him to rest.  You would not think such a persecution was possible in America.  Wake up people – the tyranny is here.

On a more positive note, some news regarding The Paranormal Christian Show that I host with Reverend Mark Hunnemann.  We have only had two shows so far at our new home, BTVN TV, and already, we have had over 268,000 hits on our show page, of the over 2 million total the network received through the whole month, and our hits only account for 17 days.  With our first show, March 17th, we had 1546 hits with 87% retention rate, coming to 1345 total viewers.  On last week’s show, even with server and network issues, we had 8009 hits with an average 76% retention, coming to 6086 total viewers.  The switch to the new video format has definitely made a huge difference in the outreach of our ministry.

We are now discussing the creation of a subsidiary network dedicated to Christian programming, of which we will help in developing and recruiting for.  It will allow us to further impact people and bring the Truth of God’s Word in a format and media that is exploding.

This week, we will be having guest speaker Kristie McGuire, author of the soon to be released, “Escaping The Cauldron”.  Though Kristine McGuire was raised in a traditional Christian home, at an early age she became fascinated by the occult. At sleepovers her friends told fortunes and held séances. As a teenager, she was convicted and put all games of mysticism aside.

She went to a Christian college and married a Christian man. Despite her decision to follow God, a longing for the occult persisted. This desire eventually led her to leave her church and husband, and to fully embrace witchcraft. Later, unable to abandon her church upbringing, she decided to revert partly back to Christianity—becoming a Christian witch.

Escaping the Cauldron exposes the subtle occult influences that affect 21st century Christians. Part Bible study, part memoir, this book takes the reader deep inside Kristine's eight year journey as a witch, medium, and ghost hunter and reveals how God mercifully restored her faith and life in Christ.

This will prove to be a very interesting show, and one that draws close to my heart, having had my own journey and escape from witchcraft, delivered up from it by the power and love of Jesus Christ, and to follow God's calling to help others transfixed and oppressed by the demonic.

Join us at 7 pm EST, Saturday March 31st.  You can link to the show at http://www.TheParanormalChristian.com  Come check out our new format.

Do We Have An Intelligent Designer?

By Lisa Grace

If you want scientific arguments for an intelligent designer, there are all kinds available.

http://www.icr.org/

Many scientists who are atheists or agnostics have found their papers will not be accepted by certain institutions or journals, because unfortunately, the proof flies in the face of having an old earth or the argument for evolution.

NASA has sent the voyager probe over 11 billion miles out, and it only took since 1977.

http://www.geek.com/articles/geek-cetera/voyager-in-uncharted-space-pushing-at-the-edge-of-the-universe-2011126/

NASA has discovered that past the edge of our universe, it’s nothing like they surmised.

http://www.nasa.gov/

How much harder is it to believe that beings made of light could travel at the speed of light? Not very.

When you take us (carbon based organic machines) down to our cellular level, you see how complex one cell is. It’s made of mini factories that run quietly and with great precision.

Even Darwin in the Origin of Species admits that if cells are complex, it points to a designer and the evolutionary theory falls apart.

DNA is nothing more than an organic tertiary computer code. None of this just “magically happens”. It would be like saying cars just “magically happen”. Everyone looking at a car knows there was a designer behind that mass of carbon and metallic particles.
One animal cell is infinitely more complex than a car. Yet, people insist by adding the magical ingredient “time”, it assembled itself.

It doesn’t take faith to believe in an intelligent designer. Just an understanding of complexity.

Issue 67 –Psychics Talk for God – Part 2

By Kirby Robinson

LOOKING FOR NEW BLOGGERS

EYE ON THE PARANORMAL has some spots open for new bloggers to post once a week or twice a month. You can have a viewpoint that differs from everyone [even me] who posts here. You can cover any paranormal/theological topic you'd like and can share links to events, books, seminars, etc.

BOOK MONDAY

We'd like to start featuring paranormal books [fiction and nonfiction], every other Monday. On BOOK MONDAY, you can write about your book, what it's about, why you wrote it, what others are saying about it, etc. It's your space for one day to freely promote your book and get it out to the public.

Keep current and follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/eyeonparanormal

The following blog is not meant to group everyone with spiritual gifts as fakes or frauds. There are good ones and bad ones out there, but we ask the public to use caution when dealing with anyone claiming to have spiritual gifts.

The disclaimer discussed in this blog did not come from any particular psychic but from several psychics' websites. We took the language of their disclaimer and merged it with others.

Psychics Talk for God - Part 2

Did you notice the lack of response by psychics to my previous blog? Why is that? The haters and fakers would say it was simply a lack of interest in my blog. Personally, I think it had more to do with the fact that they know I'm right and they fear where I'm about to go with this blog series.

I recall being part of the new age back in the 80's. I had to chance to meet some of the top psychics, mediums, channelers, and so-called teachers. I drank with them [and we're not talking coffee], I saw their excesses [even new age teachers have groupies and bed hopping was very common], and I took lessons from them [read a bunch of religions and occult practices, mix 'em together, keep your stories straight and soak the public]. This was their best advice then and it hasn't changed. One wonders how many of them are sociopaths, psychopaths and narcissists? How many of them have absolutely no conscience and how many have sold out to the dark side? And their escape clause is that it's all for entertainment purposes only.

One of our readers asked a very interesting question after reading last week's blog.

"Not trying to stir the pot, but ministers and preachers get paid and television evangelists make big bucks. Should they feel bad for charging, too? People have to make a living."

Ministers are people who aren't just doing a job--they are responding to a calling from God. Their hours aren't from 9 to 5, but 24 hours a day. They are on call to their flock at any time. No matter if it's a natural disaster, death, illness, or crisis, they are expected to be there. They are expected to teach the word of God to their flock. They are expected to reach out to the poor, the hungry, the sick, and those who have not heard the word of God/those who are unsaved. It's not just a job to them. More often than not, unless it's a big church, they do this for little or no pay and have to work a side job to make ends meet. In many cases, they have a family to support.

Are there pastors that make a lot of money? Yes. There are new mega-churches that do pay well. Yet at the same time, it's a 24-hour a day situation. And in the mega-churches their responsibilities are even greater; not only to the flock but to the organization as well.

TV and radio evangelists: again there are two categories: the big ones and the small ones. They are responding to the call of God to carry His word to not only a flock but to the world. Again, more often than not, it's a 24-hour a day situation.

The big time organizations have the same issues, but magnified. [No, I'm not naive enough to think that all are legit: there are good ones and bad ones]. The bad ones need to be exposed -- like Bob Larson's.

So, in the case of people working for the glory of God, they certainly deserve to get paid.

Now let's look at psychics. Are they called by God to do this? Are they on call 24/7? Do they give advice and consul for free? Do they visit the sick and feed the hungry? Give water to the thirsty? Clothe the naked? No. It's simply a way to make money. Some say that only being a psychic is a small part of their lives when they are getting paid to give readings. Their life is their life. Do they teach for free? But most importantly, do they give the glory to the Lord?

Again, they say it's a gift. If so, give it to others for free. I've never heard a pastor say I will lay hands on you or pray for you for $29.95. I will share my visions/dreams I have had about you, or the gift of prophecy, for a fee. But the psychic does.

I read a book that was written by the former flavor of the month when it comes to psychics, who said their gift was uncertain. Whatever they saw was open to interpretation. Now is this a gift the public should trust? But remember: it's for entertainment purposes only, it has that escape clause.

Where in the Bible does it ever speak of God's gift[s] of spiritual insights, visions, dreams, prophecy, laying on of hands as uncertain? Would you follow a God that was kind of right sometimes? The Bible teaches us that the God of the Bible is the God of all Gods. He hears everything, He is always there and He is always right. Where does the Bible say the spiritual gifts are not certain? The prophets of old have never been off the mark. Where does it say what He says is uncertain? He stands behind His word and His gifts. And in no chapter or verse within the Bible will you find the phrase: for entertainment purposes only.

The lies these psychics tell and force themselves to follow won't help them when the end comes. Saint Peter at the gate is no respecter of personalities. The judge that sits on the most high throne doesn't buy into popular lies and tools of mass marketing and deceptions.

Next week: Where did these lies get started? Please read the book of Genesis because it goes that far back. [Hint: you'll find a connection to Paranormal State if you do a good job in reading and comprehension].

Religious Harmony

By The Dalai Lama

A Biased Mind Cannot Grasp Reality

I am extremely delighted to attend this inter faith seminar on the Preservation of Religious Harmony, Coexistence and Universal Peace organised by the International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF), Ladakh group. Thank you very much for the detailed explanation of the association's history, activities, objectives and their relevance in the present century. I have nothing to add on what the speakers said earlier. But I would like to say a few things.

We are now in the twenty first century. The quality of research on both the inner and physical world has reached quite high levels, thanks to the tremendous stride in technological advancement and human intelligence. However, as some of the speakers said before, the world is also facing a lot of new problems, most of which are man-made. The root cause of these man-made problems is the inability of human beings to control their agitated minds. How to control such a state of mind is taught by the various religions of this world.

I am a religious practitioner, who follows Buddhism. More than a thousand years have passed since the great religions of the world flourished, including Buddhism. During those years, the world had witnessed a lot of conflicts, in which followers of different religions were also involved. As a religious practitioner, I acknowledge the fact that different religions of the world have provided many solutions about how to control an agitated mind. In spite of this, I still feel we have not been able to realise our full potential.

I always say that every person on this earth has the freedom to practice or not practice religion. It is all right to do either. But once you accept religion, it is extremely important to be able to focus your mind on it and sincerely practice the teachings in your daily life. All of us can see that we tend to indulge in religious favouritism by saying, "I belong to this or that religion", rather than making effort to control our agitated minds. This misuse of religion, due to our disturbed minds, also sometimes creates problems.

I know a physicist from Chile who told me that it is not appropriate for a scientist to be biased towards science because of his love and passion for it. I am a Buddhist practitioner and have a lot of faith and respect in the teachings of the Buddha. However, if I mix up my love for and attachment to Buddhism, then my mind shall be biased towards it. A biased mind, which never sees the complete picture, cannot grasp the reality. And any action that results from such a state of mind will not be in tune with reality. As such it causes a lot of problems.

According to Buddhist philosophy, happiness is the result of an enlightened mind whereas suffering is caused by a distorted mind. This is very important. A distorted mind, in contrast to an enlightened mind, is one that is not in tune with reality.

Any issue, including political, economic and religious activities human beings pursue in this world, should be fully understood before we pass our judgement. Therefore, it is very important to know the causes. Whatever the issue, we should be able to see the complete picture. This will enable us to comprehend the whole story. The teachings offered in Buddhism are based on rationality, and I think are very fruitful.

Today, a lot of people from different religious backgrounds are present here. In every religion, there are transcendent things that are beyond the grasp of our mind and speech. For example, the concept of God in Christianity and Islam and that of wisdom truth body in Buddhism are metaphysical, which is not possible for an ordinary person like us to realise. This is a common difficulty faced by every religion. It is taught in every religion, including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam, that the ultimate truth is driven by faith.

I want to emphasise that it is extremely important for practitioners to sincerely believe in their respective religions. Usually, I say that it is very important to distinguish between "belief in one religion" and "belief in many religions". The former directly contradicts the latter. Therefore, we should resolutely resolve these contradictions. This is possible only by thinking in contextual terms. A contradiction in one context might not be the same in the other. In the context of one person, a single truth is closely associated with a single source of refuge. This is of extreme necessity. However, in the context of society or more than one person it is necessary to have different sources of refuge, religions and truths.

In the past it was not a major problem because nations remained aloof from each other with their own distinct religion. However, in today's close and inter-connected world there are so many differences amongst various religions. We must obviously resolve these problems. For example, there have been a lot of religions in India for the past thousand years. Some of them were imported from outside whereas some have grown in India itself. Despite this, the fact is that these religions have been able to coexist with each other, and the principle of Ahimsa has really flourished in this country. Even today, this principle has a strong bearing on every religion. This is very precious and India should really take pride in it.

Ladakh has been a predominantly Buddhist area 'for so many centuries. But other religions such as Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism have also flourished here. Although it is natural for the people of Ladakh to have attachment to and love for their own religions, yet this place has a very peaceful environment with no major problems of religious intolerance. During my maiden visit to Ladakh, I heard elderly Muslims using the phrase "community of sangha" in their speeches. Although such phrases are not found in Islam, yet a reference of this kind invokes a lot of trust amongst the Buddhists. Therefore, people from different religious background in Ladakh are very close to each other and live in harmony.

As far as the Muslims are concerned it is appropriate for them to have complete devotion to Allah while praying in the mosques. This is also the same with Buddhists who are completely devoted to the Buddha when they pray in Buddhist temples. A society, which has many religions should also have many prophets and sources of refuge. In such a society it is very important to have harmony and respect amongst the different religions and their practitioners. We must distinguish between belief and respect. Belief refers to total faith, which you must have in your own religion. At the same time you should have respect for all other religions. This tradition of believing in one's own religion and having respect for others is in existence in Ladakh since your forefathers. Therefore you do not have to invent it. The most important thing at the moment is to preserve and promote this tradition. I would like to thank all of you for working hard regarding this and request you to continue to do so in the future.

If a harmonious relationship is established amongst societies and religious beliefs in today's multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural world, then it will surely set a very good example for others. However, if all the sides become careless, then there is a danger of imminent problems. In a multiethnic  society  the biggest problem is that of between the majority and the minority. For instance, in the capital Leh, Buddhists constitute the majority of the population whereas Muslims belong to the minority community. The majority must consider the minority as their invited guests. The minority, on the other hand, should be able to sensitise with the majority. In other words, both sides should live in harmony. In order to sustain this harmony, both sides should not take lightly the sensitive issues between themselves. Indeed, the majority should pay attention to and appreciate the views and opinion of the minority. Both sides should discuss and clearly express what they think about the other's view and opinion. The minority, on the other hand, should be careful about where the sensitive issues of the majority lies and express whatever doubts they have in their minds. If problems are resolved in such a friendly manner; then both sides will gain. Suspicion of each other will only harm both communities. Therefore, it is very important to live in harmony and analyse where the opinion of the other lies. The best way to do this is to engage in dialogue, dialogue and dialogue.
