Two Facts & An Educated Guess Regarding the Mayans & December 21

By Reverend Mark Hunnemann

Even though it is after the fact now, the Mayan mania raises larger underlying issues which can be applicable to other situations. Besides, this was so huge for so long, that we would do well to examine some of the principals involved in presenting a consistently biblical response. I think some of the beliefs in the paranormal community would benefit by being exposed to these truths from God’s word. I originally wrote this on the Eve of “destruction”, and intentionally left the verb tenses as is to drive home the widespread fear that prevailed…how quickly we forget. What are you fearful of?

First, God is absolutely sovereign over every molecule of the universe. For Christians our worldview is God-centered, and His sovereign control is a defining characteristic/attribute of our Lord. This is in sharp contrast to pagan gods like the Mayans worshipped. “…having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will. (Eph. 1:11) Every single event, or day, that occurs is in some sense predestined by God. This does not nullify human responsibility, and it is meant to comfort us (Rom. 8:28-30) Even the wicked actions of wicked men/demons are sovereignly orchestrated for our good. Since God is King over history—His story—no pagan calendar should ever be conceived as orchestrating the future.

Second, the God of the bible is all-knowing, and only He can predict the future. (Ps 139, Isaiah 44-50) For what is worth, most Mayan scholars believe that they did not see tomorrow as the end of the world, but as the beginning of a new cycle. Regardless, when the oracle regarding Dec.21st was first uttered, it was a false prophecy. In Deuteronomy 18 there are two tests of a true prophet: 1. EVERY prophecy had to be fulfilled…100% accuracy (no non-biblical prophet or psychic/medium, ancient or modern, that I know of, claimed perfection); 2. They must believe and teach in Yahweh, the only real God. Mayan prophets failed both tests, mainly because demons and Satan are not all-knowing, which means they cannot predict the future. Their religion, which included human sacrifice, was animated by demonic spirits. Hence, the prophecy for tomorrow is a false prophecy and should be rejected by God’s children. Please take comfort in knowing that this oracle is less than zero in its authority.

Third, I am quite certain that Satanic and demonic activity will increase tomorrow. This is not based on God’s inerrant word (not this specific event), and so it is not absolute. However, those into dark magick, pagans/witches, and New Agers are all “praying” that tomorrow will mark the beginning of an unprecedented new era. Whether wittingly-- as with Satanists, or unwittingly—as with pagans and New Agers, a worldwide appeal is being made to Satan and his dark forces to amp things up. Those heavy into higher consciousness beliefs see this as a time of galactic alignment—there is international amping up of meditation that will allegedly bring in a new era of evolution with increased energy vibration, and other powers. The Satanists see through that crap, and are boldly beseeching their dark master to accelerate the growth of his infernal kingdom…on earth as it is in hell. How that manifests is anybody’s guess at this point. (None of this minimizes the reality of the first two points).

Be still and know He is God!  Anxiety regarding tomorrow is sinful, and can only occur if we live in fear instead of faith. To move from fear to faith, remind yourself of God’s absolute sovereignty, and that God alone is all-knowing. One Christian has more power than a million demons because the holy and all-mighty Trinity has made a home in our hearts (Jn. 14). My suggestion is to counter these dark prayers with holy prayers to the Light of the world. Pray without ceasing and focus on God pouring His Holy Spirit out to thwart the plans of the evil one—asking the Lord to use us to extend His kingdom in our sphere of influence. We made it through Y2K just fine, and this will be the same. Do you know what Jesus’s most frequent negative command was (telling us what not to do)? DO NOT BE AFRAID..FEAR NOT. God is on His throne, and He is tenderly saying: fear not! You are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus…greater is He who is in you, than he who is in the world. What are you fearful of?

Guardian Angels

By Michael O'Brien

If there be Guardian Angels, who exactly are they?

I'm reluctant to relay my story for several reasons but mostly for fear of ostracism. Despite that I do take some comfort in the realization that those involved in the paranormal are typically more open-minded than most. In any event, it is my hope this story will open a new line of discussion within our community.

In this post I'd like to pose the question, "Who, not what, are Guardian Angels?" It's believed by many they are long since passed family members. Some surmise they are friends or acquaintances from a past life. Others postulate they are in reality, earthbound Angels that have yet to take human form. What I would like to suggest is a possibility few that I'm aware have discussed in-depth as of yet.

At almost five years of age my parents took our extraordinarily large family to Long Island Beach for a day of relaxation. Unfortunately the day would be anything but that.

Before I go any further allow me to say that I agree there shouldn't be any excuse for neglectful parenting. However, one can't exactly fault the naivety of parents in the early 70's for their transgressions. Especially those with enormous families who managed to lose only one child once in their history. Nonetheless, that's exactly what occurred on a Autumn day on a New York beach.

As the story goes I wandered off from my parents while at the beach and ended up in the ocean. While I have no recollection of actually entering the choppy tide, I do remember being submerged in the water. I also recollect the undertow seeming to grab hold of my tiny ankles and insist upon dragging me deeper into the oceans depths.

To this day I can clearly recall grasping the sand, rocks and twigs on the oceans floor in panicked desperation. With every firm grip I believed it would pull me forward to shallower waters. Much to my terror, I realized that what I thought was a solid grasp was actually dissipating between my fingers in rapid succession. First the sand, then twigs followed by the slight rocks. Once again I felt myself being pulled deeper into the briny, murky depths of that chilly northeastern ocean.

The last thing I recall wasn't drowning or feeling the peace others speak of but lying beach side on my tummy. What's more, feeling exhausted and overheated and as if my skin and tongue had dried and cracked. I also recollect feeling like I'd just been rattled from a deep slumber. At least the sand, salt and sun in my eyes did their best to offer me that impression.

Next I remember brushing my dark strands of hair off my cheek and away from my eyes. I recall my confusion as I realized they had dried and adhered tightly to my silt covered face. Somewhat shaky I attempted to lift myself with my elbows. As I did I immediately felt a soft hand press gently between my shoulder blades. It was if I was being told to stay still where I was for awhile. I complied without question.

When my eyes finally adjusted I managed to gaze up at the person who had gestured me. This was the first time I saw her. Almost clearly, if not for the blinding sun that hovered steady behind her.

Standing before me was a woman so tall and beautiful I remember being damn near awe struck by the sight of her. Albeit a fleeting thought, I do recall thinking how much I desperately wanted to touch any part of her. The tails of her flowing gown, her long black mane that hung like a pendulum down her chest or her pale ivory skin, even her dark thick brows. I just didn't have the strength. Unfortunately I could only stare as I watched her clearly then fade in and out in broad, wispy strokes. In any event, I felt completely safe with her and on some level, I knew I knew her.

As I lay there motionless for what seemed to be some time, I noticed she made no sound whatsoever. Nor did her smoky, translucent robes that flapped unrestrained in the breeze. She simply stood there above me watching me, waiting for me. Finally she knelt down, smiled and offered me a slight upwards nod over her left shoulder. It was as if to tell me it was time to return to where I came from.

Again, she spoke not a word and neither did I. I recall I rose unsteady to my feet and visually scanned the shoreline before me. As I recognized miniscule flickering police lights far off in the distance, I decided to make my way towards them.

Even though I wanted to spend all day staring at her or maybe even playing with her, I walked on. I turned around only once to see her again. Perhaps I was making certain she was real or maybe I knew that was all the time I was going to be afforded by her. Either way, it was during that last glance that she placed her index finger to her lips as if to say, "This will be our secrete." I didn't quite know why all though I nodded in the affirmative and wobbled away. No, "Thank you," no, "See you again," nothing. I simply walked on.

I've thought about this encounter many times throughout my young and adult life, careful not to distort that memory in any respect. I also kept that secrete I made for as long as I could. It wasn't until I was in my mid twenties that I finally told my best friend about this encounter.

Just prior to disclosing this, my best friend, my partner and myself had a group portrait taken together. Four weeks later our photo was ready. As our portrait was unveiled by our artist my knees instantly weakened and my body swayed. I began to perspire and tremble and my mouth felt as dry as it did that ominous day on Long Island Beach.

There she was, right before me in the center of that painted portrait. Her long raven hair draping off her right shoulder down the middle her chest, her deep dark eyes, her thick brows, her ivory skin. It was her! It was me!

I'm aware of how terribly arrogant this account sounds but I was exactly the woman I saw that day I should have drowned. The woman who saved me that day was me and I was positive of it.

I'm just as confused as most right now. How did I spend my life looking in a mirror performing incidentals such as brushing my teeth or hair and not realize who I was? Yes, I should have recognized who that woman was years ago but I honestly never did. I swear, I just never put it together.

Perhaps it's because I look at my outer shell and seldom, if ever, take a moment to truly gaze upon who I genuinely am? Or perhaps I fail to see myself through the eyes of those who perceive me with absolute precision? After all, had I told my best friend about this experience sooner, I'm certain she would have pieced this mystery together for me.

With that, I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this type of encounter. An encounter where they believe they somehow managed to save themselves from certain death. Or if they've ever heard of this experience through family, friends or their paranormal research.

The only other account I'm familiar with concerns a woman who claims she attempted suicide at fourteen unsuccessfully. Much later in life, she attempted to take her life again. However, this time she reports she was stopped by her fourteen year old self. What's more, she claims her younger self put her to bed and hid the sleeping pills from the older self. She reports that only a empty medication bottle lay on the nightstand beside her the following morning. She also claimed her younger self left her grandmothers ring thought by her to have been long since lost on that same night stand. For what it's worth, her experience was the catalyst for my writing this post.

So, is it possible to be your own Guardian Angel? If we can believe in reincarnation, life after death, alien abductions, shadow people or even Doppelgangers for that matter, why not? Is the possibility of you being your own Guardian Angel that far out of the realm of possibility?

Or was this entire experience nothing more than a hallucination of a five year old child who went an indeterminate amount of time without oxygen? Additionally, was the second account simply an inept woman who believed she saved herself as opposed of accepting her reality? That she botched yet another suicide? Or perhaps she was just to frightened to preform the act itself? In any event, I'd love to hear other accounts or perspectives on this topic. Positive or negative.

“Shame on the Media, The Blood of Recent Victims is on your hands.”

By Ryan Harshbarger

I have touched on this subject before. Perhaps if you’re one of my readers then you already know what I’m about say. If not, well I have this anger that has been boiling in me for quite a while now. After the most recent shooting in Connecticut it’s completely proven my point; the media outlets and their objective for “ratings” honestly have no souls. History Channel for example was a channel that I used to love, and watch regularly because of their great programs. However, ever since all this Dec 21st nonsense they have become my most hated outlet.

To loosely quote Morgan Freemans supposed hoax article, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/blackberry/p.html?id=2315848 which does hold validity “There are a lot of sick people that see these suicide murders on TV, and they want to outdo them and become famous.”  This is serious and the fat cat rating gluttons need to heed these words. “You’re not helping at all you’re only amplifying these tragedies” by 1. “Glorifying these shooters and turning them into house hold names.”
“Where’s the name of the victims?” 2. “Pumping out all these programs about the Apocalypse.” “Haven’t you learned that some take this very seriously; and they’re killing their families, themselves, and others?”

From this moment on I am personally holding the History Channel, and all major outlets that are feeding the heads of the sick personally responsible for these tragedies. “The blood of these victims is on your hands.” And as your ratings increase, and you get your raises and paychecks I want you to think long and hard the next time you air a program about “blood money” the check that was just deposited into your account is exactly the same.

Shame on all of you! These programs are systematically depleting the lives of innocent men, women and children. So when Dec 22nd comes and we’re all still here what then? Will you at the History Channel conjure up another apocalyptic scenario to once again scare the masses? Or will you acknowledge your errors and release a statement to refute my feelings on what you’re responsible for?

In closing to all the producers, writers, directors and staff of all the media outlets that are responsible for these atrocities. “I wish you all a very happy holiday, and pray that you have a shred of human decency in you, that will kick in and make you see your errors.” Unfortunately I’ve seen your track record and I’m almost positive you’ll do nothing and continue to chase ratings. Here’s a question “what would you do if everyone stopped watching your stations?”  Ponder that one over the next few days as we countdown to the end of the world that you’ve created.

Simplifying Spiritual Warfare

By Reverend Mark Hunnemann

I want to demystify or simplify spiritual warfare, without coming across as simplistic. Here are four principles which may change your life, and you can use for the rest of your life. The mind is where the action starts and progresses; and by action I mean problems, temptations, and sin.

First, we must distinguish between guilt and guilt feelings. If we don’t, then Satan can have a heyday with our consciences. In Psalm 51 David confesses that he has sinned… first and foremost against God, even though he had murdered Bathsheba’s husband and committed adultery with her. The horizontal sin was most certainly real and significant, but all sin is primarily cosmic treason against our holy God (vertical rel.). “Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. V4” He incurred objective guilt before the Ultimate Judge. As the psalm progresses, David reveals that this objective guilt has caused seriously distressing guilt feelings—in v.8 it is compared to the pain of broken bones.  In the relativistic age like ours, scores of folks hustle to secular mental health professionals to deal with guilt feelings, which they can only put a Band-Aid on. Part of the beauty of the gospel is the realism; it diagnoses accurately both cause (guilt) and affect (guilt-feelings), and then if offers the only solution—Divine forgiveness and consequent cleansing of conscience. 1 John 1:9 wonderfully captures this, “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  If you struggle with guilt feelings, examine your heart for unconfessed sin—once confessed/forgiven, it is your responsibility to not let the guilt feelings fester. How?

To be effective in spiritual warfare we must first recognize the lies in our minds…sometimes we feel guilty for something we have not done or have been forgiven of. Throughout the day thoughts bubble up, and they seem to always have “I” attached to it, but it may not necessarily be coming from me. It sounds like my inner voice, but it may not be. When tempted by the world, the flesh (indwelling sin), or demons they don’t take on an ominous inner voice tone—we hear what sounds like us speaking to us. Some of these thoughts can be awfully destructive can’t they? We need to recognize these thoughts for what they are and not ignore them; acknowledge them and expose them to the Light. If you have thoughts that say you are: worthless, loser, ugly (fill in the blank please), then do NOT ignore those thoughts. Just as guilt is distinct from guilt feelings, we need to make a distinction between temptation and sin. Jesus had all kinds of nasty, brutal, and depraved stuff projected into His mind by Satan, but our Savior never sinned. Please do not feel guilty for being tempted with, say, a lustful thought popping into your mind. It is only if you dwell on it that it becomes sin. If you did something for which you feel shame, you need to expose it to the light by acknowledging it; or if it was done to you this shame needs to be named. Submerging it will only give the demonic a foothold in your mind. Often this exposing to the light is all it takes to be delivered from self-destructive thoughts.

If that is not enough, then verbally renounce the lie.  James 4:7-8 tells us that if we submit to God and resist the devil, then he will flee from us. What lie do you currently believe about yourself?  Is it guilt, fear, shame, condemnation…? Be specific…as specific as you can. Oftentimes, there are multiple lies. The bible says that the power of life and death lie in the tongue, and some of us have been wounded or scarred by something our parents, spouse, or some other significant person said to us: “You are ugly….you will never amount to anything…stupid…and so on.” BTW, what is the ratio of compliments to criticism in your marriage or with your children or friends? Then, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what specific lie is causing these self-destructive thoughts. Once you have a handle on what specific lie you have been entertaining in your mind, then you should say out loud, “I renounce the lie that I am a failure…stupid…” Occasionally you may sense the presence of the demonic, and you will need to rebuke it verbally as well. They need to hear it because they cannot hear your prayers or silent rebukes.  May I suggest that some, if not most temptation/destructive thoughts, emanate from our flesh or indwelling sin, and not from demons. (James 1:14-15; Gal.5:17; Rom.7)What I do insist on is the cruel insanity of people like Bob Larson who tend to label these negative/condemning thought patterns of Christians as evidence that they are demon possessed. A thousand times NO! Whatever the source, renouncing it verbally will be helpful (especially if demonic in origin) and cannot hurt. Even when I do confess my sin mentally, I learned long ago the benefits of saying, “Thank You” to the Lord out loud—it reinforces the reality of the fact of my being forgiven. Plus, I think it only appropriate that we express gratitude to our Forgiver. May I suggest that you give that a try? So, I ask again, what lie/s do you believe about yourself? Renounce that lie specifically and verbally.

Lastly, in order to be effective in spiritual warfare we must speak biblical truth over/to ourselves. If you feel worthless and have renounced that lie, then say, “I am not worthless because God shed His precious blood for me…I am worth something because God loves me and has forgiven me…I have value because I am made in His image…and so on” Or better yet, quote relevant scripture: if you are feeling accused or condemned say, “Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Rom. 8:1) It is important that you find the exact biblical truth to take captive the specific lie you are being besieged with.  Don’t look to worldly remedies, but speak God’s truth that gets right to the heart of the matter.

The psalmist in Psalms 42 and 43 is discouraged, but he moves from fear to faith by talking to himself, instead of letting inner, disquieting thoughts speak to him. Speaking to yourself is not the first sign of insanity! Speaking biblical truth to yourself is essential to being an effective spiritual warrior. We must intentionally address ourselves and the lie with the liberating truth. Hurtful thoughts come unsolicited, but mental assertiveness is necessary to overcome this negative  inner monologue…then, we will begin to possess our possessions in the Lord.

Again, hiding the source of current shame, and not countering it with biblical truth, only gives power to the lie. Like kudzu, the lies will rapidly grow and wrap its tendrils around your heart—choking the life out of you. I tread gently here because you might have some horribly painful memory that you have suppressed. This process is not to replace biblical counseling in the case of dealing with a trauma. Diagnose where/what the problem is in the mind, and speak truth directly to it. The heart of spiritual warfare is not sensational—like rebuking some manifesting demon-- but daily acknowledging the lies, renouncing the lies, and speaking spiritual truth to the lies that are joy robbers. These are principles that you can practice for the rest of your life.

If we are not feeding our minds daily with God’s truth about Him, then our minds are being fashioned by something else…mostly lies. ”Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” (Rom.12:2 see 1 Peter 1:13-16) Living in a fallen world can be painful at times, and all around us are non-biblical remedies being shouted at us. I was divorced 13 years ago, and due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to live with my own precious children for most of that time. The guilt, shame, worthlessness, and sadness I wrestle with on a daily basis are sometimes unbearable. “I’m a failure as a dad.” is what I hear over and over in my mind, and I desperately wish I could turn back the wheels of time, but I can’t. I live with this wide-awake nightmare every day, and especially at night when I am alone. But this I know…our Lord brings beauty out of ashes, and causes ALL things to work together for our good. I am thankful that I am not just whistling in the dark when speaking God’s truth over me. What burden/lies can you lay at Jesus’s feet, who is gentle and tender-hearted to your sorrows? What truth can bind up that bleeding heart? “Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) May the Lord continue to heal you from the inside out in order that you might be increasingly effective as a mighty spiritual warrior. Amen.

Hi and Merry Christmas!

Free ebook (2nd edition) The 15th Star (A Lisa Grace History Mystery)
The second edition is averaging five stars (first edition was 3.7 stars)
Now through Sunday, December 23rd.The 15th Star (A Lisa Grace History-Mystery)

A recent review: "This is one of the most fun stories I've read in a long time. I could not put it down and read it all in one day. I loved how the author mixed present day with the past. The author did not fill the book with a lot of ridiculous, boring details, unlike so many other authors. The level of details was perfect. I felt she had a perfect mixture of everything one could want in a good book, ie: Drama, Mystery, Action, History, Humor and Romance."

Set during the War of 1812:
In the fall of 1809 Grace Wisher, a young slave girl, escapes the plantation to live her life in the port city of Baltimore, Maryland. She is indentured to Mary Pickersgill who teaches her the skill of sewing flags and standards. Yet Grace is hiding a terrible secret, one men will murder for even hundreds of years later.

In the present, Keiko Zorben is finishing her master's degree by working as an intern at the Smithsonian Institute. While archiving mislabeled letters, she finds a clue to the whereabouts of the missing star from the Star Spangled Banner. For over two hundred years its location has been a real-life mystery, until now.

Keiko asks the handsome Dr. Julian Lone Wolf, the head of the American Indian Studies Department, to join her on her search for the missing star.

When a docent is murdered and an attempt is made on their lives, Keiko and Julian realize finding the missing star and the secret it holds, is their only key to survival.

"The 15th Star" has been compared by first readers as a mix of "National Treasure" meets "1776".

Issue 99 – The Paranormal “Man” of the Year is…

By Kirby Robinson

For us to award this honor a person must do something that sets them apart from everyone else in the paranormal field. Their actions must cause the average person in the paranormal to stop and say, What a Guy or Gal!

Unfortunately, this year’s winner actions did not add anything to anyone’s life, change the world, or bring anything new to the old paranormal table. This person’s actions showed the ego is alive and well. This person’s action showed that even a moron can call themselves a paranormal investigator/demonologist. This person’s actions showed no signs of love and compassion that we so need right now after the outright slaughter of 28 human beings--20 of them young children.

There will be 20 sets of gifts that will go unopened this Christmas. 20 bikes that will go unridden, 20 dolls not played with, and 20 teddy bears that will go unheld.

A few hours after blood was shed and lives forever altered, one person wanted to go into the Sandy Hook Elementary School and do an investigation. That person is the winner of the Eye on the Paranormal’s “Man” of the Year award. His name is Kurt W. Kesler.

On Friday, as the nation was shedding tears over the loss, it seems that the paranormal fame train whistle was blowing loudly as Kurt posted on Facebook a desire to go ghost hunting in the state of Connecticut. Common sense was shown as people became outraged that such an action was even being tossed around. Kurt removed the thread and thought it would fade away. Someone posted that since it’s no longer there you have no proof it ever happened. Well, we say thanks for screen shots and thank you Worst Paranormal for sharing it.

Here’s a link to the thread. Scroll down the page for the entire multi page thread:

Now it would have been bad enough if this is the place the story ends but it does not

Just like Chip Coffey, Mr. Kesler wants to exploit Ground Zero to further his career. He has tried repeatedly to conduct a ghost hunt on it, as he desires to release a DVD of it for profit. Did he intend to share money earned from it go to the families? In Mr. Coffey’s case, he went to Ground Zero with a client and a reporter in tow to contact the lost loved one. Since then he’s never failed to mention this tasteless action in his media information kit.

The final insult comes from the fact that the school board who oversees the schools in Newtown, CT started to reactive requests form a ghost hunter who claimed to be a paranormal investigator/demonologist wanting to have access as soon as possible to conduct an investigation in Sandy Hook.

As much as we’d like to lay all the blame on our winner’s doorstep, we can’t. On Bishop Long’s Facebook page, he asked if there was any place off limits when it comes to doing an investigation? Most people who responded thought it was okay as ghost hunters had a right to investigate any haunted site at any time.

A few years ago, SCIFAKE caught a para-celeb selling tickets to ghost hunts at public cemeteries without the owner’s permission. During visiting hours, visitors who were paying respect to lost loved ones saw ghost hunters walking across graves talking loudly. The promoter even gave the finger to those at the cemetery.

Additionally, Mr. Kesler has a book out about demonology. If you’re a demonologist you have to have a book. This isn’t a bad idea. At least the reader, if they have any basic knowledge of the subject, can kind of determine the amount of knowledge the author has about the subject. In the case of Mr. Kesler’s book, Demonology 101, within the first few pages he shows no wisdom on the subject, as he knows nothing of Christian theology or where demons come from.

So we can only hope that Mr. Kesler keeps up the good work as the poster boy for what is bad paranormal behavior.

Medical Advice from the Dalai Lama's Doctor

By Jen Christensen, CNN
updated 11:06 AM EST, Wed December 5, 2012

Atlanta (CNN) -- A young girl bravely stood to ask the Dalai Lama's doctor a question, and he gave her an unusual answer.

Dr. Tsewang Tamdin, a world-renowned expert in Tibetan medicine, visited Emory University in Atlanta on Monday as part of his effort to reach more American medical practitioners. He wants to develop collaborative projects between the Tibetan medicine system, which is more than 2,500 years old, and Western medicine.

The little girl told Tamdin she suffered from asthma. She wanted to know if there was anything in Tibetan medicine that could help her get better.

Tamdin, who spoke through a translator for the hour long lecture, immediately switched to English. In a gentle, almost too-soft tone, he explained what might help.

Inhalers doctors prescribe for asthmatics works well, he said, and told her to continue using one if she does already. The inhaler, though, treats the symptoms only. Tibetan medical practice, he explained, ultimately aims to get to the root cause of the problem.

"While others might consider the holistic practice of Tibetan medicine 'alternative medicine' or a kind of side practice, I would like for others outside of our system to consider the Tibetan healing system full-fledged healing," Tamdin said. "Tibetan medical knowledge has tremendous potential to add to modern medicine."

Dr. Tsewang Tamdin
Tibetan practice teaches that people get sick when a person's physical, psychological and spiritual well-being are out of balance.

To restore balance, Tamdin recommended diet and exercise changes for the girl. He encouraged her to get proper rest and to get exercise that encouraged deep breathing, such as skipping or cycling.

He also suggested eating three or four white raisins a day. There is a property in the fruit that helps breathing, he said. But perhaps the biggest sacrifice for a child was his advice to avoid cold foods -- particularly, he said, ice cream.

Another patient who came to him with asthma symptoms would get a completely different diagnosis, Tamdin said. Each patient's disease is treated differently from the next. That's in large part because traditional Tibetan medicine is grounded in Buddhist philosophy. In his training to become a physician, Tamdin also studied Buddhist tradition and astrology.

American and Tibetan doctors have some practices in common. If Tamdin were to have a longer consultation with the girl, he said he would perform familiar diagnostic tests. He would examine her urine sample and take her pulse, but he also would ask questions that would be the more familiar terrain of a psychologist. He tries to find out if a person is angry or anxious or if someone is becoming too self-centered.

The Dalai Lama
"Tibetans believe in our interconnectedness," said Geshe Lobsang Negi, a former monk who is now director of the Emory-Tibet partnership. "When we lose that perspective -- that we are a kind of little speck that is infinitely connected with the rest of the world -- when we see ourselves as the solid, fixed, all-important center of the universe, we call that ignorance, and that means we are vulnerable to illness."

This whole person approach to Tibetan medicine is being analyzed by a number of research studies in the United States. An NIH-funded study is examining the impact that compassion meditation can have on alleviating depression.

Compassion meditation is a Tibetan Buddhist mind training that asks a person to examine why they feel a certain way about someone and then to develop feelings of love and empathy for a number of people that will grow with more practice to include even people they normally dislike.

Studies have shown the medical effectiveness of meditation overall. A 2003 study of mindfulness-based meditation showed enhanced antibody production after someone receives a flu vaccine. Another study from that same year found cancer patients who were trained in mindfulness-based stress reduction showed a boost in their immune system.

And a study this year from Carnegie Mellon University showed mindfulness-based meditation has a far-reaching influence on both psychological and physical health. Mindfulness means being present and in the moment, and observing in a nonjudgmental way.

Negi's 2008 study of compassion meditation showed a reduction in stress-induced immune and behavioral responses. Several other studies under way are looking at the impact of Tibetan treatments on certain viral illnesses and on hepatitis.

Tamdin believes ignorance is at the root cause of all illness.

"If you think about this, it makes sense," Negi said. "For instance, if you believe you are the center of the universe and someone has something you want, you may become jealous and believe you deserve what that person has."

"You may become so jealous," he added, "you don't sleep at night and you will be stressed. Medical tests have shown there is a biochemical change in your body created by a release of a stress hormone. In Tibetan medicine, it is important to recognize the role the mind can play on our own physical well-being."

Tamdin said that modern medicine treats symptoms, but said a patient will never get better if they fail to attend to psychological issues.

"If one does not gain this understanding of selflessness, they won't be able to overcome their ignorance," he said. "One way to look at it is to watch the bird and its shadow. It may fly and fly high into the sky, but it continues to leave a shadow on the surface of Earth. As long as you have ignorance within you -- even though you are enjoying good health -- there is always a shadow of sickness falling upon you. From this ignorance arises three mental poisons: attachment, hatred and delusion." All those will affect energy, he said.

In addition to actual medicine and dietary changes, a Tibetan doctor may also prescribe the patient practice more kindness and compassion toward others -- or that they practice more compassion meditation.

Western medicine is reluctant to accept the Tibetan medical idea that some unexplained illnesses may ultimately be caused by someone's karma or even by evil spirits. The language Tibetan doctors use to suggest that good health is based on the balance of bile, phlegm and wind may seem a little too foreign to modern medicine practitioners.

But the holistic approach to a patient's health -- treatments that involve diet, behavior, prescription of medicine and contemplative practices -- may continue to appeal to physicians after they see demonstrated proof that these kind of therapies work.

"The Tibetan tradition has evolved over 2,500 years," Negi said. "It has a rich tradition that has helped the health of people for many many years.

"His holiness the Dalai Lama was the first to say that these things we believe in should be subjected to scientific tools so we could better understand the human condition overall and help us to better deal with the situation of our own well-being."

Christmas Giving

By Stephen Piersall
Deliverance Ministry Central NY
"So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7)

The countdown of Christmas shopping is dwindling down and the gift-swapping event will commence. The old saying “It’s better to give then receive” comes to mind especially during the holidays from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve. However, are we giving enough and to where it can make a difference?

The world celebrates the birth of Jesus, on December 25th and we call it Christmas. If you research this you will see that Christmas was originally a Pagan holiday, and looking at the calendar of today compared to the calendar back in the day, you will find out evidence that Jesus was born more so in our spring season, but the exact date cannot be identified. Now as they say, “You can’t fight City Hall”, and to try to change the world of beliefs and traditions of Christmas is a battle no one can win but should.

Therefore, the world will continue to go shopping and spending our money excessively this time of the year. So I ask and challenge you, if giving is better than receiving what are your commitments toward giving to the needy?

Have you stopped Tithing at your local church to be able to buy more gifts?

Are you just digging into your pockets for loose change instead of peeling off a few dollars to put in the red bucket outside of major retail stores?

Have you considered as you make your large family Christmas meal of donating to the local food banks?

Are you aware you can give your old cell phones to an organization that will ship them overseas to the military to use for the holiday season?

Storing old eyeglasses in a drawer or simply throwing them away is a waste in many ways. Give the gift of improved vision, and help a stranger see the world much more clearly, so they can read their Bible too.

Let me give you a partial list of charities that may appeal to you:

Animal Rescue
ASPCA
Local Churches
Make a Wish Foundation
Red Cross
Salvation Army
Soup Kitchen
St. Jude Children’s Hospital
Toys for Tots
Wounded Warrior Project
etc.

How are we to give?

God wants us to give according to our ability. Jesus told His followers, "give alms of such things as you have" (Luke 11:41). God never asks us to give more than we can. “Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasury. In addition, many who were rich put in much. Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites. So He called His disciples to Him and said to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood" (Mark 12:41-44). Planned giving should cover all options of family, friends, and charities. Is it really giving to the needy if we just offer what exists after spending on so many gifts for others?

Make this Christmas a special one; follow the path that Jesus laid out for us to follow.

How Serious is the Belief in Trapped Spirits?

By Reverend Mark Hunnemann

My interest in the theological issue of spiritism accelerated like a rocket when I realized the titanic With the American spiritual landscape littered with the rubbish of all manner of crazy ideas and beliefs, it has the dubious distinction of being the arch-heterodox belief of the day…that is my opinion and I am prepared to defend that sentiment.

The first argument is simple but profound: fifty percent of Americans now believe in trapped spirits. HALF—ONE OUT OF EVERY TWO!—OF THE POPULATION HAS EMBRACED THIS ERROR…HIGHER WITH THE YOUNGER CROWD…AND GROWING FAST EVERY DAY.  No need to drone on here, but what other specific belief error comes anywhere near that quantity of people? Number of people affected should certainly be considered when determining if an issue merits being called a crucial issue, should it not?  Spiritism is a crucial issue which must be passionately addressed because more people have embraced this erroneous belief than any other heterodox belief.

Certainly one can believe in ghosts and still be saved, because Scripture clearly teaches justification by faith alone (Rom. 4; 5:1) However, the ability to discern the relative importance of theological/spiritual beliefs is vital for effective Christian life and ministry. The relative importance of certain issues/beliefs can fall within four categories. 1. Absolutes define the core beliefs of the Christian faith…what one must believe to be saved (the belief in absolute truth is a distinct issue); 2. Convictions, while not core beliefs, usually have significant impact on the health and effectiveness of the church and individuals; 3. Opinions, are less clear issues and are usually not worthy of dividing over; 4. Questions are issues which are currently unsettled. These criteria, and the seven below, are designed to help sort through the myriad of issues we face by categorizing them into four distinct levels of seriousness…hope they will help you in the future with thinking through the significance of other issues as well.

Where an issue falls within these categories should be determined by weighing the cumulative force of at least seven considerations: 1. Biblical clarity; 2. Relevance to the character of God; 3. Relevance to the essence of the gospel; 4. Biblical frequency and significance (how often in Scripture it is taught and what weight Scripture places upon it); 5. Effect on other doctrines; 6. Consensus among Christians (past and present); 7. Effect on personal and church life…all the categories should be considered collectively in determining how important an issue is to the Christian faith. The ability to rightly discern the difference between core doctrines and legitimately disputable matters will keep the church from either compromising important truth or needlessly dividing over peripheral issues. (pg. 2502 ESV Study Bible, emp. added)

In a sense, the main goal of my book is to provide the cumulative evidence (mentioned above and other) to argue that the issue of trapped spirits lies within the realm of convictions—see above for distinctiveness of four categories of issues…#2. While a biblically accurate belief regarding spiritism is not a core/absolute issue (not necessary for salvation…belief in the deity of Christ is an example of a belief that is a core issue), it is an exceedingly important conviction or teaching of the bible. Belief in ghosts, and attempting communication with them, can do serious damage to the church and to an individual’s spirituality. I should hasten to add, it IS doing serious damage right now. Let us look at the relative importance the bible gives to this issue, and the ramifications for the spiritual and emotional health of people by looking at these seven points.

1. Biblical clarity—using accepted principles of hermeneutics, Deuteronomy 18:9-14 and Leviticus 20:6-8, 27 are they key texts relative to communication with the dead (this is a distinct issue which is beyond the scope of this newsletter, but I devoted an entire article on this), and they are clear and explicit regarding the exceptional wickedness of spiritism. God as Judge used Israel as executioner of the Canaanites due to the latter’s occult practices which included spiritism. The land had become so defiled by this and other occult practices that it was vomiting them out. As I mentioned, using sound interpretive principles, it is abundantly clear that these texts have priority over all other “ghost” related texts. Then, when we look at these texts, we see that they are transgenerational in their authority. As far as biblical clarity, these texts are as clear as clear can get. There should be no debate if you under Christ’s Lordship. Remember that Jesus Himself quoted from Deut. three times when countering Satan’s climactic temptations in the wilderness.

2. Relevance to the character of God—the notion of ghosts casts a shadow over God’s omnipotence, and goodness (actually ALL the attributes of God are frontally assaulted by this notion)…what kind of God would leave deceased babies here as spirit babies? That “God” would be Satan-like. Spritism implies that the Lord is not sovereign over His creation—a godlette or McGod. “They died so quickly their souls got stuck here.” Are we to believe that manner of death can snatch believers out of God’s hands? God forbid! I could go on and on here…

3. Relevance on the essence of the gospel—the perfection of the Person and work of Christ is seriously undermined and impugned if we believe that some people get trapped when they die. What are we saved from, if death is NOT a doorway to heaven?  A McSalvation at best. While it does not utterly ruin the atonement, as denial of the deity of Christ does, it comes perilously close to it. Was Jesus’s salvation perfectly efficacious or not? Is Jesus the Son of Man, the conquering Warrior over evil and death, or not? Is it good news to believe that God’s blood was shed, only to wake up in the front porch to hell?

4. Frequency and weight—while spiritism is not mentioned often in the bible, where it is mentioned, the utmost weight or gravity is placed upon this issue (see 1 above).

5. Effect on other doctrines—pull out a book on bible doctrine and you will see how EVERY doctrine is undermined by the notion of people getting trapped here. For example, the biblical doctrine of hope is hopelessly destroyed by this belief. Hope is certainty regarding our future glory—how can one enjoy this basic fruit of the atonement when the fearful prospect of possibly being trapped here is hanging over our heads? Hope is not only an important biblical doctrine, but it is also crucial for a healthy emotional state. Another example is the believers union with Christ—we are in Christ, and indissolubly united with the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. We are already in heaven with Jesus, in a very real sense (Col.3:3). Our union with Jesus is unbreakable, and it is the hub from which all other spiritual blessings flow. What does it say about that union, if we can be separated from Christ indefinitely in a paranormal gutter-world…Satan’s home turf? The same corrosive effects occur to many other biblical doctrines. Please check it out for yourself….it may cast a whole new light on this discussion.

6. The consensus of Christians (past and present)—from the early church fathers who railed against the same pagan Gnosticism as we do today, up until today, the monolithic consensus of the doctors of the church has been that death ushers everyone immediately into their eternal destiny. I do not know of a single judicious theologian, in 2,000 years of church history, who has believed in ghosts—death has always been seen as certain entry into either eternal life or eternal death. Are we so foolish to ignore their collective wisdom?

7. Effect on personal and church life—how can you live with joy inexpressible when you are speaking to demons, and are being demonically oppressed?  Because the spirit realm is the God ordained temporary home of most of the fallen angels (rest already in hell), then when people summon spirits they immediately find themselves playing in Satan’s sandbox…and they are trespassing, which gives the demonic legal right to attach and attack. Since the notion of ghosts is so hostile to all that we call holy, then belief/speaking to the dead seriously undermines the stability of a Christian’s spiritual foundation—like a three legged table, it would not take much a “bump” to cause them to crash. As I mentioned, this belief is extremely corrosive to all it comes in contact with—other orthodox beliefs held side-by-side with it, will tend to be affected by it, and not vice versa. Kind of like when a Christian marries a non-Christian, the latter tends to pull the Christian down…having a corrosive effect on their spirituality.
