Welcome back to our latest edition of Eye on the Paranormal. We are reaching the final issues of this series.

Dear Readers,

It has come to my attention through various sources and personal emails that many of you are upset with this series of blogs. Why? It seems that the subject matter, my tone, and accusations that I am simply jealous of other people’s success.

I’m deeply sorry if these blogs have upset anyone. That is not my intent or reason behind them. That being said, just because I write Eye on the Paranormal doesn’t mean that you have to read it. If it upsets you or offends you then skip it and come back for my Monday and Thursday teachings. Or feel free to pray or receive prayers in my Weekly World Wide Prayer Circle each Wednesday. If none of the above interests you, then walk away from my blogs altogether. I’m not here to placate others. I’ve never lived that way, nor would I want to.

I don’t dislike Ryan Buell, Chip Coffey, PRS, or Paranormal State. What I do dislike is deception, distortion, and people who think they are getting helped but end up getting used. As to fame and fortune of others both of those are brief and fleeting. And when we die and go where we each personally feel that we go, our level of fame and fortune in this life will not help us at all. What will help us is did we love? Did we show compassion? Did we pursue the truth? Did we protect others? And did we fight the good fight of faith?

What I’m doing in this series is what any good lawyer should attempt to do in a case -- establish a clear consistent pattern of behavior. There will be two more blogs that will cover the remaining episodes of season 1 and season 2 and the final edition is when the words will come from the horse’s mouth themselves. And this series of blogs will come to a completion.

P.S. Some have said that I’m devoting far too much of my time and effort to this series. All the investigation was done by others who diligently spent their time analyzing DVD’s, making phone calls, and doing the footwork. They feed me the information and I put the narratives together. This would be far too big of a project for one person to tackle alone.

Each week we will post questions that we would love PRS (Paranormal Research Society) to answer. But we know they never will.

Due to all the repeated statements by Ryan Buell concerning the Amityville Horror case, I would like to give people a chance to read for themselves that there was no haunting at that residence in New York. And the only people that were ever terrorized were the innocent bystanders whose lives were altered by all the wild allegations put forth by those who spread the deception. ANALYSIS OF PARANORMAL STATE SEASON 1, EPISODES 9-13

We now continue to do an episode-by-episode overview of season 1. As we do, the numerous para-celebrities that make an appearance on the show will be added to the Paranormal Moment of Truth Challenge each week.

BEER, WINE & SPIRITS – Episode 9

This episode concerns Brian, the owner of Katie’s Bar located in Long Island, NY. He has a failing business which he’s desperate to save, so Brian comes up with the brilliant idea that the bar is haunted. The haunting consists of a ghost that hangs around the basement breaking wine glasses indiscriminately. Prior to moving forward I really feel it’s important to note that none of the current workers are ever interviewed about personally witnessing the ghostly activity.

Ryan must have an endless supply of magical color changing shirts. When he first arrives at the bar he has on a dark t-shirt that within a few moments suddenly turns into an electric blue t-shirt in the middle of a scene. And wait, the magic isn’t done—seconds later it turns into a dark t-shirt again and the black scarf he’s wearing is now tied around his neck.

We’re told that this bar has been in business for 20 YEARS, owned by various people, yet no one has ever made any money or knows the history of the bar.

The team places wineglasses and surrounds the bases with baby powder. If one is going to go that far why not station a camera on the table? Especially after the first night when the wineglasses have supposedly moved.

A wineglass is suddenly thrown from the bar surface breaking off camera. Yet we see nothing. Counselor Jamie Hernandez begins her interview at 3:28 PM. She suddenly has to flee to the outside, which is already in darkness.

When Sergei and Ryan reenter the bar it’s simply dusk outside.

Ryan breaks out his EMF detector then orders all the power shut off but the track lights remain on. Ryan doesn’t point out to the audience that an older building will give off high readings due to the wiring within the walls. You’ll notice he gets the loudest reading when he swings the EMF very close to the wall.

Since this alleged investigation the bar owner has not passed up any opportunity to promote his bar as being haunted. PRS and the bar have a financial relationship as they hosted one field trip there and they will be hosting their upcoming Halloween party at the bar.

There is an over pass that is right next to the bar that a TRAIN drives through.

SHAPE SHIFTER – Episode 10

This case concerns a single mother, Georgia, and her teenaged daughter Katie, who are being haunted by a spirit, which is later determined to be a shape shifter.

It’s interesting to note that Ryan brings up the issue of Native American spirits to the family long before the issue is ever brought up in the actual investigation.

Ryan who’s had two encounters with Native American shamans, in each season, doesn’t go too well in either case. They have located what the shaman determines to be a vortex in the backyard. And that moving the stones could possibly release the spirit and cause harm to others. Brent Allaire of the Penobscot Nation says that the best thing to do is seal it and it will be taken care of the next day when his Elder, Ron Strongheart, can be there. But Ryan and Eilfie can’t wait and they disturb the site. The Native Americans show up to perform a simple smudging ceremony and seal the vortex. And all is well.

But not in Ryan’s mind. Because there are 10 additional minutes yet to fill and Chip Coffey needs to be placated. What we are left with is a Keystone Kops imitation where Chip ‘n Ryan and the rest of the crew chase the imaginary spirit up and down the hallways in the house. And the imaginary spirit simply flees when the owner tells it to, and all is well.

In episodes 11-13 we now begin with what I’ve decided to call Paranormal State’s Twilight Zone Trilogy. Just as in the classic TV series what is not real becomes real, real turns unreal, time and space is bent, and if one can clearly understand what’s going on you end up being a better person than me. Within these next three episodes you’ll see the length of deception that is carried out by the show.

PARANORMAL INTERVENTION – Episode 11

Here we are introduced to the story of Carol Anne Crowley, a senior lady who spends too much time taping EVPs.

The first distortion of the facts is that this is an EMERGENCY investigation. That can’t be the fact due to the fact that the production company had to put a crew together and get filming permits at the locations of the home and Grand Central Station.

They arrive at the residence at night. Eilfie is wearing a dark outfit as she and Ryan interview Carole Anne in the dining room. Now it’s alleged that Carol Anne has been spending too much time with EVPs yet her total supply is half a dozen cassettes within almost two years.

We then see Eilfie in the garage interviewing Brian, the husband, and she now is wearing a green outfit. Brian is wearing a button plaid shirt and Heather has a black/multicolored pattern jacket on. Please keep this in mind as the episode plays.

The next scene is a house tour. Heather’s multicolored jacket has morphed into a solid red one. Carol Anne informs the team that her brother will no longer come to the house to stay because a spirit pushed him off the mattress. We then see an interview with the brother shot in the daytime and Ryan is wearing a dark sweatshirt. Hold that thought in your head. The brother informs Ryan of a suicide in the house several years ago. We are given the impression that Ryan learns this for the first time during the interview. Well, folks, we jump back into time to the first interview with Carol Anne informing Ryan and Eilfie about the suicide. We then see Heather and Eilfie interviewing Brian, which had to be the first night. Brian’s shirt midway through the spliced interview changes into a dark jacket and t-shirt. Then there’s a sudden cut as Heather remains in the garage, but Eilfie morphs into Sergei.

We then see a cut of Ryan writing on a dry erase board that has the title Woman in the Window which is from an episode that aired three weeks AFTER this one.

We are led to believe that in the Rockaway, Long Island, Eilfie and Heather go knocking on the doors of the neighbors very late at night. And … Surprise! Surprise! Heather’s multi colored jacket has now turned back into a red jacket.

Then, Ryan brings in an expert on EVPs, Dr. Ron Milione, and suddenly it’s daylight. In our timeline it should be Investigation - Day 2, but Ryan’s timeline says it’s Investigation - Day 1. PRS is just amazing as they can warp time and space, as they will.

Carole Anne informs the EVP expert that she gets a lot of names, but we only hear one: Mary. She also claims that she gets a lot of messages, yet we hear only one: get out of here.

And sorry to say, if anyone closely listens to the tapes that’s Carol Anne’s voice we’re hearing on tape.

Also note, Carol Anne is sitting on the bed in one shot, and that there are only two people in the room, Dr. Ron Milione and her. Suddenly she is in a chair next to the EVP expert, and she’s wearing glasses. Next cut Sergei just appears into the bedroom, the chair’s gone, the glasses are gone, and she’s back to sitting on the bed.

Notice that the so-called Dead Time, which according to the legend Ryan has created, takes place from 3:00 to 4:00 AM. However, according to their own computer screen it is taking place on January 5, 2007 at 22:29. That translates as 10:29 PM. And observe that Eilfie is back to wearing the outfit that she had on in the beginning of Day 1.

Please note that Ryan states in his voiceover right before the EVP expert scene that it’s Investigation - Day 2 and the time is 8:02 PM. Then we see a caption that reads: Investigation - Day 2, 9:00 AM? Huh? Someone please call H.G. Wells, Ryan Buell has come up with a better time machine.

During the team meeting at 9 AM on the second day of the investigation which happens to follow the first 48 hour day in the history of the world, both Ryan and Eilfie have on outfits that were worn at the beginning of day 1.

Ryan decides to bring in Lorraine Warren while he has clothing from Day 1 on, worn during the first interview with Carol Anne. Lorraine Warren lives in Connecticut but is able to arrive in Long Island in less than an hour. It’s broad daylight when she enters the home, but when she supposedly listens to the EVPs for the first time, it’s dark. Then when Lorraine meets Carol Anne for the first time it’s broad daylight.

At no point during the intervention or during the post intervention is anything ever done to drive the spirits out that Carol Anne has invited in.

Finally, there are so many errors, inconsistencies, and lapses of logic in this episode that I could go on and on, but due to time restraints let’s move on.

SCHOOL HOUSE HAUNTING – Episode 12

This episode centers around two paranormal investigators Shannon and Jeff Sylvia. If the names sound familiar they should. Shortly after this episode aired Shannon was hired to be one of the investigators featured in Ghost Hunters International on the Science Fiction channel. It’s alleged, but we never really see any proof of, ghosts of children are supposedly haunting the converted loft. And the only real “damage” that ghosts ever did was bang a bathroom door open. Outside of Shannon claiming to have some troubling dreams we get no indication that there was really any kind of haunting taking place. I’m not going to belabor the point of inconsistencies that appear in this episode like I did in Paranormal Intervention and Shape Shifter, as that would be overkill. But the points I would like to bring out are:

~1 The audience is never told that the Shannon and Jeff just happen to be seasoned paranormal investigators. You are given the impression that they are crying out for help from Ryan and PRS.

~2 At 6:41 PM it is bright daylight on January 11, 2007 according to the team’s computer screen.

~3 At 7:38 PM it is bright daylight on January 11, 2007.

~4 Just as in previous episodes the clothes interchange unexpectedly in a fashion that if one goes back and reedits the episode you see how the investigation was conducted.

~5 Dead Time occurred Friday, January 12, 2007 at 23:31 or 11:31 PM.

~6 This has the least amount of evidence ever presented within the series that there was an actual haunting. So the viewer is left watching another fake case courtesy of PRS.

THE HAUNTED PIANO – Episode 13

It concerns a pair of Whitehall, Pennsylvania antique collectors, Nadine and John, who picked up a free piano off of Craig’s List. And strange things begin to happen in their home such as a mice infestation and John reports a sense of doom and depression.

One thing that Nadine brings up is that a deactivated cell phone begins to flash the number 666. This has nothing to do with Satan, Lucifer, or the Devil. It’s a sign associated with the Beast, which will be unveiled along with the False Prophet and the Antichrist.

When the team first arrives at the site the couple wears white sweaters, but when they are interviewed about the impact that the piano has had on the husband, John is wearing a dark sweater and Nadine is wearing a dark top.

During Dead Time Heather and Ryan are on the front porch on a very cold winter’s night with snow on the ground and paranormal activity is noted because both of them are cold. Duh, it’s February!

At the end of the first Dead Time both Eilfie and Ryan are in different outfits than what they were at the beginning.

Notice when they call the former owner of the piano listen carefully and ask yourself, does it sound real? Or does it sound flat, monotone, and scripted?

Ryan calls Lorraine Warren late in the afternoon. She then shows up while the day is still sunny. It can’t be the same day if she was driving in from Connecticut.

When Lorraine examines the piano for the first time remember it’s toward the end of the second day. Nadine has the same outfit on when the team first arrived on Investigation - Day 1.

When Lorraine is talking in the living room she has a coffee cup and saucer in her lap on one cut, the very next cut, the cup and saucer disappears.

Later on in the episode when Ryan is driving back from the warehouse after they destroyed the piano, he calls Lorraine on his cell phone. Remember that Lorraine was supposed to stay with the couple to make sure that all was OK. Lorraine informs Ryan that she just “talked” to the family and that every thing is OK with them. If she was still physically at the residence she would not use the word talk, she’d say everything is fine here.

But the biggest deception of them all and probably fitting for the final scene of Paranormal State’s Twilight Zone Trilogy, is when PRS is burying the piano, so as no one else will encounter it. Now remember we’re talking about Pennsylvania in February. You will notice:

~1 No snow.

~2 The ground is not frozen

~3 Brown cornstalks still standing upright in the fields.

~4 If they were actually burying the entire piano they would need more space than the little hole that they dug out with two shovel loads of dirt

Now I’m a country boy, and it’s been several years since I’ve been on a farm, but I don’t think nature has changed its patterns, even with Global Warming. In February the ground is frozen. In February even if there are some cornstalks left in the fields they won’t be standing straight up but would be beaten down by the winter storms. So actually this was done at a completely different time -- prior to the start of the episode or several months later.

In next week’s edition we will finish Season 1, the week after that we will do the entire Season 2, including the unaired episode, and then the finale where the truth is finally revealed.

CRYPTIC MESSAGE:

To the one that I had not talked to in a few months you’ve gone from public to private. I think you’ve been used and I think you know you’ve been used. We’ve exchanged private emails and you know my intentions are above board. If you need additional proof I’ll put you in contact with others.

I have also witnessed heavy-handed tactics being used against people who question your alleged authority within the paranormal community and dared to raise questions concerning the validity of appearing on the A&E shows, Paranormal State, and Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal. I can no longer sit by in silence. That is why I came up with The Paranormal Moment of Truth Challenge, which will benefit you, your organization, the paranormal field, and a charity that would be assisted from the donation of the prize money.

1 ~ It would silence your critics if you are determined to be telling the truth about all your claims and how they are presented. There can be no one left to challenge your honesty and integrity.

2 ~ It would not only benefit your organization, but it would also help the entire paranormal field. Because if such evidence is true, it will be brought to a much wider audience, which hopefully would fuel additional legitimate investigations. So it’s a win-win situation for everyone.

3 ~ The charity of your choice would have the prize money donated to them. If the truth is being told, that prize money could reach $500,000.

So, what is The Paranormal Moment of Truth Challenge? I am sure you’ve heard of the Fox Network program entitled The Moment of Truth. This is where a contestant is hooked up to a lie detector test and asked 50 questions, of which 21 of them are used on the actual show. As long as you tell the truth, you keep on winning money -- up to $500,000. The production company, Lighthearted Entertainment Inc., would jump at an opportunity of doing a show with the two of you. And I will put my personal credibility on the line and appear, as well. Well, another week has sped by and it’s time to start the presses, spread the news, and expose deception to the light of day.

First, there is a rumor on the streets that as of press time I have been unable to verify, but since it has appeared on some web sites, I’ll go ahead and share it with you. A&E has pulled the plug on Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal, and it seems like Chip and Ryan are not taking it too well. There is even a rumor going around that Paranormal State might not be back for Season 3. Seems the ratings are slipping and A&E is not too pleased about this.

It’s nice to feel the love from you. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over. But in all honesty, I can seriously think of other things I could be doing with my time, energy, and money, than investigating PRS and Paranormal State. There are cases I could be working on, a book I could be writing, and prayers and meditation I could be engaging in.

But as our investigation grows, and the more that is uncovered, I feel that this is a cause that anyone with a clear conscience could not walk away from. I’ll take all the personal and slanderous attacks, threats, and innuendos. Keep writing them and sending them my way.


SOME INCONSISTENT FACTS FROM CHIP COFFEY & RYAN BUELL

In Chip’s case, a recent blog that he posted on his MySpace page entitled “Demons on Paranormal State???” where Mr. Coffey stated that only a handful of episodes dealt with demonic activity in the Paranormal State series. Well let’s put that statement to a test. In Season 1 they did 20 episodes, out of which 10 dealt directly with demons/demonic activity. Now I will be the first to admit that math wasn’t my best or favorite subject, but it doesn’t take a Penn State graduate to understand that 10 out of 20 equals 50%. Now even an old hick like me would say that a handful would be far less than 50%.

As to Ryan, it seems that he gave an interview to the student newspaper, “The Daily Collegian Online” back in 2006 covering his work with the PRS.

As you know, each week Ryan does his best Captain Kirk imitation as the credits roll where he states that as a young child his encounter with the paranormal started a lifelong interest in the subject. And he even told this to young Matthew Seighman, in the series pilot, Sixth Sense. Well folks, it seems that Ryan is somewhat confused, or his story changed in less than a year. He states in the article that his interest began as a teenager with an encounter with a ouija board that moved on its own, and after his mom threw it away it reappeared in his closet.

“Paranormal Research Society founder set to graduate”
Ryan Buell said he will still pursue paranormal research and has plans for a TV show based on his experiences.

In about three weeks, Paranormal Research Society (PRS) Director Ryan Buell will exchange his thermometers and ghost-tracking equipment for a cap and gown.
However, his ghost-investigating and demon-searching days aren't over, Buell (senior-journalism and anthropology) said.
"I started this organization because of my personal interest and also because I wanted to do something serious," he said. "I intend to stay with it."
Buell started PRS four years ago after he discovered Penn State had no paranormal organizations.

As a teenager, an incident with a Ouja board sparked his interest in the paranormal.
"After my mom bought the board for me, I started noticing things moving on their own, and I felt as though I was being watched," he said. "Then, my mom claimed she threw out the board but found it in my closet later that day."

Following this incident, Buell read books about everything from poltergeists to the Bermuda Triangle.
At Penn State, Buell's first investigation involved a 1969 murder in Pattee Library and didn't go as well as he hoped, Buell said.
"A bunch of self-proclaimed witches came to the site and claimed I was possessed by the murderer's spirit," he said. "After that, I started training people in scientific investigation."
Each year, PRS receives more than 100 claims about demons, ghosts and UFO sightings on the East Coast.
The club works with a psychologist to rule out psychosis and conducts investigations to check each claim's legitimacy. PRS accepts about a dozen cases each year and travels to the haunted sites to conduct interviews and set up equipment, such as video cameras and thermometers for detecting cold spots.
"It's a very military setup, and there's a plan for everything which happens," Buell said. "The whole case itself produces over 100 pages of evidence analysis."
Buell said his creepiest encounter occurred while investigating a western Pennsylvania demonic case that involved bent crucifixes and writing on walls.
"Each case affects everyone differently," he said. "The whole time, I felt as though I wanted to attack my teammates and overcome by this feeling of depression."
Then the psychologist went into another room and said he felt something creepy.
"Then, these deep claw marks materialized on his head," Buell said. "It disappeared a few minutes later and didn't hurt the guy. We got the whole thing on tape. After that case, a lot of investigators said they won't do demonic cases any more."
On campus, PRS has investigated claims in Schwab Auditorium and the Old Botany Building.
While the group didn't find ghosts in Schwab, it recorded voices in the Old Botany Building's basement.
"There's a test where you run a tape recorder and ask questions. Then, you play back the tape and can hear a voice responding," Buell said. "We did this in the basement of the Old Botany Building and picked up a gravelly voice which sounded like someone who smoked a lot."
Buell devotes several hours each week to PRS investigations and activities.
Twice, he tried to quit the organization because of stress.
"I kept getting drawn back into it," Buell said. "I decided I was meant to do this."
While his parents support his interest, they refuse to go on a haunting investigation, Buell said.
"My dad's a cop and deals with bad guys every day, but he says that he could never do this with me," he said. "He says that in his line of work, he can use his gun to protect himself, but couldn't use a gun against a ghost."
After graduation, Buell said he will keep busy.
Currently, he's working on proposals for a reality television show about PRS and a television drama based on his experiences as a teenage paranormal investigator.
He also gives lectures at colleges and universities and recently finished writing a 280-page fiction book.
But PRS members said Buell will continue to act as their leader.
"He's so diligent on investigations," PRS member Sergey Poberezhny said. "He kind of acts as our boss. He's going to stick around, and people will still go to him for advice."


ANALYSIS OF PARANORMAL STATE SEASON 1, EPISODES 5-8

We now continue to do an episode-by-episode overview of season 1. As we do, the numerous para-celebrities that make an appearance on the show will be added to the Paranormal Moment of Truth Challenge each week.

VEGAS - Episode 5

The title should have been Crapshoot. Sometimes you roll sevens and sometimes snake eyes.

It’s the story of a 14-year-old teenager named Savannah who’s the daughter to Stephanie, a single mother. Once again we encounter this reoccurring theme throughout the series. The daughter claims she’s seeing a dead girl’s spirit, as in the pilot episode, and is troubled by it, as in the pilot.

The trusty team of intrepid investigators arrive at the home.

One issue that PRS needs to address is you never ask leading questions when doing an investigative interview. Repeatedly, they indicate the answers they want from Savannah.

Savannah claims she wants to know what happened to the girl, Emily, and how it happened. Which she already knew prior to the team’s arrival. But more on this later. The picture she draws is a very nondescript drawing that could easily match many females. In addition, both mother and daughter describe “evil looking spirits” yet none of this is ever shown. Emily the spirit girl has brown hair which is one of the most dominant hair colors.

To our surprise PRS finds Emily just as Emily was found by Savannah on the Internet prior to the team’s arrival. All details that Savannah gives the team was always present on the www, for the entire world to see, even the pregnancy issue.

When they show Savannah the photo, they don’t do it line up style, which would have been a way to test her psychic abilities. Ryan sends investigator Katrina down to San Antonio, TX to investigate the case there while Ryan has a parapsychologist, George Dalzell, come in and interview Savannah. When the parapsychologist asks for a reading the only thing she can bring up is California and Los Angeles. Nothing else comes from her about him. I don’t think that’s any great sign of psychic ability and she almost has the type of reaction that a person has when they guess something and it’s correct. It’s interesting that no one on the team, including the parapsychologist, ever sets up any kind of testing to see if she has a measurable gift.

Meanwhile, Katrina starts her investigation down in San Antonio. She gets a phone call from Ryan and there’s bad editing here: daylight, nighttime, daylight again, as she drives to meet the family of the deceased girl.

An interesting note here is when Katrina meets the family for the first time after one phone call she says: “It’s nice to finally meet you.” That’s a phrase that is used if you’ve been contacting someone for quite some time without a face-to-face meeting. Not one that you use only after just one phone call with a person, which was earlier that day.

Chip Coffey shows up and of course he ends up in Savannah’s bedroom, which is something that he does quite regularly throughout the Paranormal State episodes. He comes up with the most profound statement: “the person just can’t quite get it together.” Which describes how many teenagers? Then suddenly he wants to shake the bed. How many times have you ever walked by a bunk bed and shook it a little?

Then we have a special effects trick editing creepy music scene concerning Emily – but nothing happens.

Please remember as the hours tick by in this episode Katrina is still meeting with the family down in San Antonio.

Chip confronts Savannah and asks her if she’s telling the truth. Yes, she says, so Chip and Ryan accept it to be 100% valid. In addition, if you notice the scenes with Chip and Ryan in the kitchen, those scenes were shot at the same time due to having exactly the same lighting – which spells one word: scripted.

Now don’t forget that it’s been about 24 hours since Katrina started her meeting with the family down in Texas.

They have the deadest dead time of the series by far. And Emily produces very little of any type of action only contacting, supposedly, Savannah. Emily says, “she misses mom and dad.” Nothing about the loss of the baby or the murder. Chip asks for a sign and then the phone rings. And guess what? It’s Katrina who has just left the family in San Antonio, which means that her meeting with them not only lasted for 36 hours, but the meeting broke up sometime after 3 in the morning. Why the producers, Chip and/or Ryan never anticipated that folks would think this logically is beyond me. But we have another Paranormal State deception uncovered. And we realize it’s another false case.

But sadly, the $64,000 question never gets asked or answered. For if it did, it would propel Chip, Ryan, Paranormal State, and Savannah to the heights of celebrity within the paranormal community. And that is asking Emily who killed her? What we are left with is just a mother and a daughter in need of some publicity. Ryan and Chip and Paranormal State are willing to give it to them, and the audience is left feeling dirty and used.

PET CEMETERY - Episode 6

Borrowing off the title of Stephen King’s famous horror novel concerning dead pets that are killed on the local highway that happen to be buried in a creepy graveyard and well, please read the book or watch the movie for yourself.

In this case a single woman, again, has property that her dog hates to go on, and the second story of a house seems to have a presence.

The first sign of paranormal activity is the dog barking wildly as Ryan ascends to the second floor and the second is that the property has exchanged hands many times since 1893.

Current owner Sybil Howe bought the home from her daughter who had two dogs killed in freak accidents on the property. In reality, they were killed on a highway. Nothing very freaky about that. One thing that is never investigated is that a young child claims she is seeing a spirit dog, but that is never followed up on.

We then have another Chip and Ryan song and dance routine, which I’m not going to bother to describe in detail except to mention that Coffey has a Styrofoam cup of coffee next to him that he did not take with him upstairs. One big thing is that Chip pulled out of the ether waves the name Margaret, which again, is used to prove Chip’s great abilities. And we later find out that Margaret owned the property in the 1960’s, which Chip and PRS already knew because they had the deed history.

Lorraine Warren, clad in a navy blue dress, is again brought in to declare her favorite line from the “The Name” episode: “Who would want to live in this house?” Now, remember what she’s wearing folks, it’ll come into play later.

We then get Dead Time, of course nothing happens outside of dogs barking and noises in the woods. And Chip does put his stage training to work as he performs a “channeling” of a spirit of a dog. We learn nothing outside of the fact that Chip can cry on command. A nice performance.

Then all of a sudden they stumbled onto an unmarked grave of a dog. And they just happen to have enough surgical masks and rubber gloves for all the PRS team to wear.

Just as in the Vegas episode, there begins to be big lapses of time and logic. When Ryan, wearing a black t-shirt, hurries into the house to give the information to Loraine Warren, who suddenly appears on the second floor, and she just happens to be wearing a different dress than the one she wore earlier that night.

We then see Ryan and gang burying the dog and Ryan now suddenly has the short-sleeved blue shirt back on and Lorraine, not to be topped by a young upstart such as Ryan, does a sudden costume change [white skirt, medium blue blouse, white short-sleeved jacket] as well. Which clearly establishes that all the outside shots were taped in one evening, out of order, hence faked and scripted. All the inside shots are done on a different day as well. Which means, as in any other TV production, scenes are shot out of order which indicates there is an intended sequence of scenes to develop the story line, hence, the story is not real at all.

THE CEMETERY - Episode 7

This one is one of the false demon episodes that Chip and Ryan are trying to distance themselves from.

It concerns the caretakers [Matt and Chandra Franson] of a small cemetery with claims that a spirit is haunting the family and causing the wife undue pain. The exam for Chandra was way too simplistic and should have been far more comprehensive in nature.

There are 3 aspects of the case that get slighted or overlooked.

1 ~ The activity increased when the wife moved into the house overlooking the cemetery. What was her spiritual background prior to her arrival?
2 ~ Matt had the urn of ashes on a shelf for 5 years prior to burying it only in his front yard with no ceremony whatsoever and showing elements of greed because he wouldn’t be compensated.
3 ~ The couple, not to be judgmental, both appear to be out of shape physically, overweight, and their physical movements are indicative of older individuals – yet they are in their 20s. If you listen to their vocal patterns and mannerisms they appear to be very unhappy people. Could this be poltergeist activity due to such physical conditions?

If you notice that the kitchen interviews that are spread throughout the episode, none of the clothing that the two PRS girls and client wear never change. Hence they were all filmed at the same time. Which again means they were shot out of sequence, scripted, and the audience duped.

They toss the word ‘demon’ about in a manner that clearly identifies that neither Ryan nor anyone in PRS has had any training to deal with the demonic. One issue that really troubled me is why didn’t Ryan call in a minister to perform the gravesite service?

MAN OF THE HOUSE - Episode 8

The case concerns an older couple, Cheryl and Bill, who are in the process of remodeling an older New England home. Ghosts are walking the halls-- which should be no surprise. Now we are told that PRS investigates only the worst hauntings but there is not indication whatsoever that these spirits ever pose a threat to anyone within the home by their presence.

There are issues in the family you can tell there are unresolved ones between the older couple, and once again you have a single mother, Diane and child, Adam.

As in “Pet Cemetery” you really get the feeling that much of the dialogue has been rehearsed, particularly when it comes to the little boy. It’s interesting to note here that Adam is being tormented by a lady spirit, but he’s not interviewed by a mental health professional.

Another issue that one thinks about when watching this episode is that Ryan constantly challenges spirits to move to the light but he makes no effort to assist them whatsoever. Eilfie, with her occult training, should have been exposed to this ceremony and feel comfortable doing it.

The most intriguing scenes are at the bar directly across the street from the house. They have their team briefing there and the bartender does not offer any of his knowledge about the house whatsoever? And that he simply waits for Ryan to make a special trip over there asking questions about the case?

They make much to do about the family identifying the ghosts from the pictures and once again they fail to follow proper procedure by only showing them one picture to choose from at a time.

Dead Time produces very little. Much is made about the woman who smells pipe tobacco, and in reality that’s not a sign of paranormal activity at all. Memories can trigger smells related to those memories. A handprint on the wall is supposed evidence of spiritual presence. All that means is that somebody put a handprint on the wall [this will come in to place in season 2].

Finally, once again, why wasn’t a professional brought in to help the spirits move along?

Beth, if you had grown up in that particular house in Amityville, NY, you would not have needed to call anyone. Newsflash: It was one big hoax! The courts have even ruled on this and there are several good books that expose it. In addition, there are numerous web sites dedicated to how the hoax was pulled off. This alleged Amityville Horror case has cost the paranormal community a lot of credibility within the mainstream. Why? Because many say if such a celebrated case is phony what else is?

ANALYSIS OF PARANORMAL STATE SEASON 1, PART 1

We now begin to do an episode-by-episode overview of season 1. As we do, the numerous para-celebrities that make an appearance on the show will be added to the Paranormal Moment of Truth Challenge each week.

SIXTH SENSE – PILOT EPISODE

This episode is responsible for creating an urban myth within the paranormal community, in the minds of the general public, and most ghost hunters: the idea of “dead time.” Ryan Buell explains that dead time is 3 a.m., the exact opposite hour of the time of Christ’s death on the cross, and the time that spirits and demons are to be the most active. Now there are problems with this logic.

1 ~ Christ died on the cross, but who knows exactly when He took his last breath?

2 ~ Time is a relative matter altogether. Einstein suggested that time could be bent, slowed down, and sped up. If we take into account that there are variances between time zones, so does that mean that a ghost or demon looks at a clock and says, “I can’t start shaking the bed ‘til it’s 3—and it’s 2:58—2 more minutes…” Or do they say, “Well it’s 3:59, so I’ll go into hiding until 3 a.m. tomorrow.” Please note that spirits are not bound by time. Time is a matter of importance that is limited to those of us in a physical body that realizes time is in limited supply.

Spiritual activity can have highs and lows at any time of the day or night. It’s illogical to think that spiritual activity increases across time zones as the clock clicks to 3 and decreases when the number changes to 4.

Outside of the establishment of the myth of Dead Time, “Sixth Sense” did launch the fledgling career of wanna be TV personality Ryan Buell and the rest of the Paranormal Research Society, [PRS]. Psychologist Adam Blai was an active part of the pilot and if he had remained a part of PRS and Paranormal State it would have developed altogether differently and positively.

The episode deals with Matthew Seighman, a boy who apparently has been hearing and seeing spirits his entire life. Since moving to a new home with his parents, the spirit of a young man, Timothy, haunts him. it turns out that Timothy was found dead in the nearby woods. But was it a murder or suicide? We never learn which. Along with the omitted fact, what about the family in the house prior to the Seighman family moving in experiencing any type of paranormal activity before Timothy’s death?

As for Matthew, I’m not going to address that much, he’s just a youngster that the production company saw as a great chance for ratings and Ryan’s budding desire for celebrity status. The saddest part of the episode is when Ryan shows a photo to Matthew of a wedding party that Timothy is a part of. This photo features 16 people. Matthew says, “That’s him.” But listen to the voice. Is he saying that’s him as in a question or as a statement? And even if Matthew picked him out is that really proof of psychic ability? Let’s take a close look at the photo. There are 16 people, so that means that you start out with a 1 in 16 chance of being right. There are 8 women, that removes 8 choices automatically. You’re down to a 1 in 8 chance. Timothy is a teenager, which removes 3 more, which reduces it to a 1 in 4 chance, or a 25% chance of guessing correctly.

In another act of deception, Ryan claims on the phone that he is with Penn State--which he is not. They have been known to repeat this deception over and over again with clients.

In closing, one additional factor must be mentioned and it’s a factor that will constantly raise its head in the series…the couple was going through marital troubles prior to the beginning of the haunting. Did the marital troubles add to the haunting?

THE NAME – Episode 2

This episode begins an arc that encompasses two other episodes,“The Devil in Syracuse” and “The Dark Man,” that deals with supposed direct or indirect demonic activity. These three shows establish, once again, more outright myths and half-truths by Ryan and his trusty old sidekick, Chip “You Told Me Nothing!” Coffey.

Once again, we meet a family with issues when it comes to the paranormal. This family has problems when it comes to marriages, relationships, and family commitments prior to the haunting. The family is made up of Jodi, a single mother, and Nate, her teenage son. She has gone through divorces and separation leaving her son without a father figure. Their new home has supposedly some kind of spirit activity but we never ever get any kind indication of what type of activity whatsoever. Paranormal State does advertise that these cases are “the most severe” but rarely do we ever see any kind of activity onscreen.

Ryan is shown that there was a mass murder several years ago on the property. And he is shocked to learn such information. Now don’t you think that this information would have been provided to PRS prior to their arrival? In addition, there just happens to be a graveyard across the street and it’s a big shock that the murder victims just happen to be buried there.

So in comes Psychic/Medium Chip Coffey. If you notice, Chip tends to pick up on where people sleep a lot in the homes that he enters. Is this in an indication of someone with great psychic ability? No. Because there are many clues in bedrooms that are indicative of age/gender/interests of the ones who occupy the room.

Chip then adds to the sense of danger by playing the demon card, saying that it is interested in Ryan.

Dead Time is called for. And many ghosts are ready to perform as the clock strikes three. Suddenly the activity picks up. Chip writes a name on a piece of paper and hands it to Ryan and the name just happens to be of a demon that Ryan just happens to have been thinking about. And this demon just happens to be one of the top demons, and it just happens to be a demon that Ryan tangled with while he was conducing an exorcism for the Catholic church two years ago.

Of course we never see the name written on the paper, which would really be a shot in the arm for both Chip’s claims as well as the credibility of Paranormal State.

Urban myth alert! Sorry folks, over at PRS and Paranormal State, you can shout the name of a demon off the top of a mountain if he’s not interested in coming he will not come. Just think of the name in your head and the demon wants to come around you and it will. Notice they say you can’t say the name, but A&E can repeatedly jumble the six letters of the name across the screen. Eilfie, who is the supposed “occult specialist” hints that she might have heard the name. This is difficult to understand, as anybody that’s studied demonology 101 would be very familiar with that name.

But Ryan’s not done with his parade of para-celebrities for this episode. Lorraine Warren is suddenly brought into the home in the dead of night. Now for those of you not familiar with this name [pun intended], Ms. Warren is one of those involved in bringing the myth of the Amityville horror into the minds of America. She continues to make money telling a false story about the Amityville horror house and has yet to apologize for her role in the hoax. She also spews additional false information when she tells the concerned mother that she is very lucky to have a priest involved in the case that will come and cleanse her home. Maybe Ms. Warren has been out of the loop but you can get just about any priest, pastor, minister, and even Buddhist monk to come and bless and cleanse your home, respectively.

And it even seems that Ryan is oblivious to the facts of the Amityville Horror case being exposed as a fake.

The happy investigators leave feeling that they have accomplished much but once you strip away the hoopla, the myths, the lies, and the half-truths, you see that once again Paranormal State has done nothing for the family. As more information will come out later about what has happened to them since the airing of the show.

Postscript: For those of you viewers who were left thinking that the mass murder that was discussed in this episode took place in Elizabethtown, near Elizabethtown or in even in the state of Pennsylvania, you were misled. The mass murder actually took place in North Dakota!

DEVIL IN SYRACUSE – Episode 3

But let's focus on the "Devil In Syracuse" case and the errors that were made in it. For those who have yet to see the episode, it concerns Ryan Buell's investigation of a young couple, Teena and Raymond, with two children with claims of paranormal activity in their trailer. Their claims were not out of the ordinary in any way, as claims go.


1. The first mistake I see in how they handled the case is in opening. You don't go in assuming it is demonic activity, and expecting to do an exorcism. The first rule you should live by, if you are a paranormal investigator, is that you rule out the probable prior to embracing the improbable. You need to completely rule out the chance of: ghosts, poltergeists, or possible psychological explanations for the activity or signs of paranormal activity.

2. The carryover from the previous episode of Paranormal State concerning Ryan's involvement with a demon known as Belial. Anyone who has read anything on the subject of demonology should be familiar with this name. Some say it is simply another name for Satan. It's not. Some say that he is the son of Lucifer. That's not true. And finally, some say he was the next in line for Lucifer's job, but aligned with Lucifer and was cast into hell. Which is true. He is one of the top lieutenants and has at least four legions in his personal army of demons to call upon. In my encounters with him he is never alone, which in this case, they acted as if he was. Also, he loves to do tricks such as move objects, rap on walls, and speak in a loud voice. He loves to show off his personal arsenal of abilities. Yet in this case, he shows no activity whatsoever when called on.

3. One myth again made popular is if you speak the demon's name the demon will come. Sort of like a dark version in the movie "Field of Dreams", if you build it, he will come. Demons can only be in one place at the same time, they're not omnipotent, nor can they hear all words spoken.

4. The trailer itself was not placed under spiritual protection when the team arrived. This put not only the family, but also neighbors and the entire investigation team in danger of being attacked and harmed.

5. Yes, it is true that the messy condition of the house, and the depression that was evident within the family can be both a result and an invitation to demonic activity.

6. In he flipping of the cross incident. Why were there no cameras set up to catch the act of flipping the cross? Why did the family react to the presence, yet Ryan showed no sense or reaction to the presence of his personal demon? A demon who's got the attention of his adversary will never, ever pass up an opportunity to show of their talents. You have to remember that demons are ego driven and will show constantly how reckless and brave they are.

7. Reverend Andrew Calder's activity within the episode was stellar. He did what any authentic exorcist would do when called upon the scene.

8. Why was there a two-week delay in the performance of the exorcism? You gave the demon two weeks to prepare for battle that was not necessary. And if a demon if Belial's level was present he would have brought in reinforcements, he would have greatly increased demonic activity and if the child was the object of his presence he would have made every effort to go after that child. Even the child being baptized within that two week timespan would not have dissuaded his intentions if that child were his final goal. And in actuality, the child's baptism would have increased his interest. For possessing such a person is a mighty trophy to the dark side.

9. Now here is a big issue, which really troubles me. When you step into demonic battle, you must have spiritual authority concerning your position. And you must have moral authority as well. That does not mean just a few forgive me, Lord type prayers, but a complete and absolute confession of all past misdeeds and also a period of fasting of the flesh, no drinking, no drugs, no lust, no sex, no anger, no envy, and no attachment. If not, the demon will most certainly use that against you during the battle. The young couple absolutely had no business being there during the exorcism. And the exorcist appeared not to know nor could he personally communicate with the demonic presence. This is not how it's done.

10. Concerning the husband being "truly possessed." The husband was not possessed at all. Possibly tainted, but not possessed. If he had been absolutely possessed, the possession on him would have lasted hours, days, weeks, or months, and not just a few minutes. He would have also reacted negatively to the placement of crucifixes and rosaries against his body.

11. The family did not have prayers of cleansing done. Nor was the safety of Pat, the houseguest, ever addressed.

12. Finally, the most obvious was never looked at. And more than likely, the paranormal activity was not demonic at all, but psychological in nature. The house was in a disarray, the family was ruled by depression, emotional and financial troubles, and a pending separation was causing huge amounts of stress between the husband and wife. Tension also was evident between the children and their parents. The presence of the houseguest seemed as though she ruled over the family and caused additional tension. The psychic negative energy will build and build until there's an explosion. Things go wrong, people want explanations for it, let's try to distract ourselves from the physical problems and the answer is we have demonic activity. I've had many cases where this is how it happens.

THE DARK MAN – Episode 4

I'll state this again, for the record. I have nothing against Ryan Buell and his team, never met the man, nor anyone from the Paranormal Research Society. But, if you're going to call yourself an expert, please conduct your investigations like one. And if you're going to call yourself a warrior, please wage the battle against the proper foe.

The Dark Man is clearly a demon and he was in control of the situation from the very beginning. For some reason, Ryan and PRS was led down one false trail after another. I think the culprit was the ego of the entire team.

"The Dark Man" episode concerns a family on a small farm in Pennsylvania. They had two sons. Chris, the youngest son, died of a drug overdose due to the presence of the Dark Man, an entity he had been aware of since the age of 5. And it seems that the Dark Man has also been terrorizing the family in their dreams, with paranormal activity, and is holding the son from crossing over. I'll try to deal with my issues of the investigation in sequential order to follow the unfolding of the episode.

~ The first error was and is how can they can conduct a haunting investigation with clear early presence of some kind of demonic activity going on and not have an exorcist or demonologist on hand?

~ Their medium is neither on site nor in the same state, but 1,000 miles away in Florida. They are walking around spiritually blind throughout the entire investigation.

~ Chris died due to a drug overdose. That is considered a form of suicide. And depending on the family's spiritual beliefs, that issue was never, ever addressed within the episode.

~ When the team goes on a tour of the basement, they learn that there has been activity there. A woman had her arm grabbed, bitten, and developed a rash. This activity is not the sign of a few unhappy earthbound spirits; this is the sign of a strong demonic presence of one or more demons.

~ They learn that people feel the property is eerie and strange, things had happened on that property but is never explained nor is the history of the property ever looked into. We then learn that a mentally ill man suffering from schizophrenia, [remember that people who suffered from demonic possession are often labeled schizophrenic] killed himself in the pond. He was holding a little box at the time. Suicide by drowning is not a common form of suicide. It has a very strong element of suffering and is not over quickly. And why did the "mentally ill man" choose to die on their property? The demon of the Dark Man must have been terrorizing him, and that's why the mentally ill man didn't come in contact with him until after his death. The Dark Man led him to die on the property, creating an entrance and a blood anointing onto it then his attention was turned on to the child, Chris. Also, the deceased son may have had some mental issues, but this is never pursued.

~ Ryan makes a severe error when he asks Helen, the mother, to determine who the Dark Man is. Ryan is the expert and he should have the skills to make the determination, but leaves that up to an amateur. And this distraught woman doesn't have any kind of knowledge of demonology.

~ Why was there Dead Time at the pond? The family had not indicated there was any paranormal activity at the pond whatsoever.

~ Why did Ryan not use the Christian rituals to get the spirits to speak, and to get the demons to acknowledge their presence? And if we accept the activity of the spirits during Dead Time, they were very minor spirits, indeed. Nor did they exhibit the kind of activity that you think Chris would be engaging in, which would be to get the investigators attention indicating that he wants to be released.

~ With Chris dead, the older brother is the next logical target with the demon and this is never followed up.

~ Helen should never have been allowed to challenge the demon. And a good medium should have been able to discern it was not Chris that was speaking to her, but the demon of the Dark Man. By her challenging the demon, she in a sense gave an invitation to that demon to come into contact with her. And there was never any indication presented at all about the family's spiritual activities, or lack of.

~ No EVP's at all! Tormented ghosts love to talk and demons need to talk.

~ Eilfie performs a banishing ritual which she assures Ryan has had "some effect in the past." Going into spiritual warfare with a ritual that simply has "some effect" does not generate a whole lot of confidence in a victory. And why did a pagan ritual need to be performed here? Where was the spiritual proof that she had any kind of authority? What was Eilfie's spiritual authority to perform the ritual if it was just being a third generation pagan? That gives no authority whatsoever. Why are Archangels being commanded in a pagan ritual? Archangels give their authority to be commanded by three entities: God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. They are not going to come in response to a pagan ritual. Pagan rituals are fine, but you don't mix religions with your rituals. Furthermore, when Ryan says, "whether it works or not, we hope it brings peace to this family." If the banishment ritual fails to work, the demon is still bound to the property, Chris is still bound to the demon, and the paranormal activity will continue. How could the family find any peace in this situation? And why wasn't a ceremony performed to release Chris, who was being tormented by the Dark Man, who was a tormented spirit, as well, under Ryan's theory. No prayers or cleansing activity is done in the house that Chris killed himself in. Nothing is done to address the demonic activity taking place in the basement. The house and the rest of the property was never cleansed as Ryan had made an effort to do in other episodes.

~ To claim, just hours after the banishment ceremony in the pond, that it was successful is simply ridiculous. All the demon did was cease his activity while they were still on the property and waited to return to his activity when the cast and crew had departed. And my biggest question is why wasn't an exorcist called in to perform an exorcism? An exorcist could have cleansed the house, and dealt with the issues that were still haunting the family.

~ The only expert in this episode that showed any kind of skill was Diane, the grief counselor

Eye on the Paranormal – Issue 2

This week’s edition of Eye on the Paranormal opens with a new feature called ASK PRS? Each week we will post questions that we would love PRS (Paranormal Research Society) to answer. But we know they never will.

You, my reading audience, are invited to send in questions and we will gladly post them in the following week’s issue. Please send them to my MySpace page email, using ASK PRS in the subject heading. And please don’t hold your breath waiting for an answer.

Secondly, as we move through both seasons of “Paranormal State,” we will be adding additional names of so-called para-celebrities who have made an appearance on either season of the show, to our “Paranormal Moment of Truth Challenge.”

So here are the questions for this week.

1. As a team, how many cases did PRS investigate off-campus prior to the start of the series?
2. How many cases does PRS investigate on a yearly basis, not including those for the TV series?
3. If you do investigate without the cameras rolling, how often do you invite para-celebrities to take part in such investigations? Or are they only there to make an appearance on the show?
4. What kind of training did Ryan Buell receive in demonology, and how was it that he became active with the local archdiocese?

Editorial Comment: Is Reality TV Ever Real?

The answer is no, it’s not. Just as in psychological research, while performing naturalistic observation, the mere presence of the observer alters the normal behavioral patterns of a subject, if that subject is aware enough to be self-conscious of being observed by others.

The same is true in the case of reality TV. The presence of a group of people in and around the home alters the natural flow of things. People say things for the camera’s sake; the producers seek to put on an exciting 22 minutes to keep the ratings high and the audience interested. And, to create an effective story arc there must be a planned set order of shots.

Thus, you can’t have a reality show that is real. It requires a script, not the kind of script where every single word is written down, but an understanding by the production team and the investigating team that they have to have certain shots. There must be a certain level of excitement, which is the type of production that “Paranormal State” engages in, so in effect, we don’t get a reality show, we simply get a 22 minute “unscripted” drama.

Article: “A Brief Look at a Few Entertainment Shows & Cultural Trends That Laid the Foundation for ‘Paranormal State’”

We love to talk about ghosts, ghouls, vampires, UFOs, etc. It adds some needed excitement to make people’s lives seem a little less bleak and break the patterns of boredom and routine that many must endure.

As long as there have been cameras rolling, actors speaking, and people watching, the paranormal has been a big drawing card. One of the earliest pieces of film considered a classic was “A Trip to the Moon.” And how many of you have heard about Orson Welles radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds” and how many genuinely believed there was an actual Martian invasion. This was followed by traditional horror monster and flying saucer movies of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. With the advent of TV you had Rod Serling’s “The Twilight Zone” that kept audiences glued to their set and at the same time harking from the 1947 Roswell Incident to the Blue Book of the 50s and 60s. It was also the era of political assassinations that had a few sinister conspiracies tied to them. The 1970s you had the debacle of Vietnam, Watergate, and the CIA revelations.

Into this mix there was a short-lived TV series watched by a small but loyal audience and later took on cult status. “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” [1974-1975] aired for 20 episodes on ABC. Darren McGavin who played the lead, Carl Kolchak, as a down-on-his-luck beat newspaper reporter who speaks into a tape recorder to provide a voiceover for the episode. Each week’s episode dealt with some kind of supernatural event such as monsters, vampires, werewolves, etc. gathering evidence as he went, but by the end the powers that be would always kill the story and disappear with his proof.

During the 1980s a sense of suspicion swept across the nation. Black helicopters, secret societies, men in black, and UFOs. Many felt that the government had sold us down the river.

The Internet gave people a new avenue for information gathering and sharing. The paranormal field, as well as the supernatural had a new tool to express itself with. In the 90s two programs laid the greatest amount of foundation for “Paranormal State.” Art Bell’s “Coast to Coast” gave an outlet for not only the casual listener but created a platform for para-celebrity status, authors, government whistle blowers and even the average Joe, if they couldn’t get the mainstream media interested. In addition, “The X Files,” [1993-2002] featured a young, handsome FBI agent, Fox Mulder, who ran the X Files Division, a unit within the Bureau that handled cases that involved paranormal and supernatural activities. Mulder was driven to find a truth every week the credits ended with the slogan, “the truth is out there.” And just like with Ryan Buell, Fox Mulder’s character was driven on his quest by events that happened to him during his childhood.

In the new millennium we had shows like “A Haunting” which reenacted actual paranormal events, and “Ghost Hunters,” which featured a pair of middle-aged plumbers and their team searching for ghosts in various locations throughout New England.

Which, if you take a close look at “Paranormal State,” you see the folks at A&E, and Ryan himself, have taken bits and pieces of the above, mixed it together. They’ve tossed in an MTV spin to it with quick cuts, eerie music, a letterbox style of presentation, and tricky lighting to give us “Paranormal State.”

So come back next week where we will begin the analysis of every single episode of “Paranormal State” in chronological order. So on September 27, 2008 we will analyze “The Sixth Sense,” “The Name,” and “The Devil in Syracuse.” I’ve already analyzed the latter, but in the light of new evidence, I’ve changed some of my opinions.

Eye on the Paranormal – Issue 1

Hello everyone! The Eye on the Paranormal is now open! Over the next several weeks we will be casting a critical look at the paranormal world, particularly the issues of honesty, integrity, and how the public has been manipulated into buying a lie.

When A&E’s Paranormal State premiered back in December 2007, I was both hopeful and excited that a show was going to factually portray the worlds of ghosts, paranormal activity, and demons, in a fair and accurate way. And at first, I was pleased with what I saw. But as the hoopla and hysteria began to die off a more critical look at the program and the actions of the Paranormal Research Society, along with those who have appeared on it as experts in the field of paranormal activity, demons/demonology, and psychics/mediums, things did not add up. The episodes were filled with sloppy investigative techniques, incorrect statements of how paranormal activity works, inconsistent storylines, and dubious intents.

Suddenly, anyone that began to question the validity of the A&E program began to have their character assassinated.

The second season opened with a good deal of anticipation. But it also raised even more questions, and when those questions were asked, they were met with a higher level of threats and intimidations. Soon, blogs were deleted, and the persecution continued with entire MySpace profiles being deleted.

As I watched Season 2 unfold, I finally told myself that I had to come out and state that Paranormal State is a fake.

Tammy Wilson and Tonya Hacker of The Ghost Divas! are hosts of a weekly live radio show and have 20 years of combined experience within the paranormal field. These ladies were removed from the list of speakers scheduled to appear at Univ-con this weekend. Also, their blogs stating nothing but facts were deleted from MySpace due to complaints filed by Paranormal State and PRS. This got my ire up, so I challenged both Ryan Buell and Chip Coffey to the Paranormal Moment of Truth Challenge. As you know, Fox Network has a program entitled Moment of Truth. This features a contestant being hooked up to a lie detector and as long as they answer truthfully for 21 questions, they could win up to $500,000.
