NOTE: This review of Chip's 30-minute phone reading was originally published online in 2009.
I had a reading with Chip I think he has some psychic ability. But I was not impressed with the reading I got. And he got me talking when I should not have told him anything.I think that real psychics do not and should not have to ask any questions. I could kick myself for answering him but I did. I am rather fried by a lot of what is going on in my life and I ended up being led into TELLING HIM things…! The worst thing you can do in a psychic reading.
I should have said nothing and told HIM to do the work.
I was ok when he asked what city and state I live in. But when I asked him about one of my kids who has health problems he actually asked ME what the problems were. And from there , because I am stressed, he got me talking. Enough to figure out there is family stress, health problems with a kid, and so on. In fact he offers nothing extra. You have to ask the questions and he pretty much clams up after giving a small amount of info, as if he’s not getting a run of information on anything and he’s only waiting to get clues from you {after seeing how much he can get you to talk}.
I was not told much that I did not already know, no details that really stood out. It felt more like a “cold reading” if you know what those are, although I’m not saying that was what he did. But there was NOTHING much said about the future, he told me what I already know except for when I asked about family members finding new jobs. I was given a time period {which is still in the future so I cannot say yet if that much is accurate}.I asked Chip if I would be moving out of state, and he actually gave me the stunning “news” that it was up to me. Wow… what a revelation. He should have said “I do see you moving” or “I do not see a move at all” or at least, “I’m not sure I can’t seem to tune into that”. But he tells me it’s up to me ?! That is not a prediction. I could have told myself it’s up to me. I wanted to know did he KNOW anything. Because for me it is uncertain, its not obvious and I am STILL not sure if I will be able to pull off a move out of state in the near future or any future !
And I paid $200.00 for 30 minutes of this,! {I am out of work and had to use a credit card, I just wanted some idea of the future so I put it on my credit card and I now regret that}.
Also, he wasted precious time {remember, this is only a 30 minute reading and you can bet most psychics would rather hang up on you than finish a sentence once that 30 minutes is almost up…}. Anyway, like I said, he wastes time. And I wonder is this on purpose ? Example,in the beginning he gave advice about the reading…the same advice his secretary gave when I made the appointment. Things like “write things down if they don’t make sense now, because they will later” and so on…things that are obvious, things that the secretary already told me, things he should just put on his website {in fact I have to re-check but I think he did already put instructions there}, he should do ANYTHING BUT start making a list of WHAT to expect AFTER the reading has already started and the clock is ticking. For God’s sake. 30 minutes goes by fast. Why should I pay to be told to make notes, again ??? And etc ?
That was not all. After the prayer {which is fine}, he somehow got on the topic of why he had to re-schedule my original appointment date {I had not even ASKED him about the reason why, he brings it up ON MY TIME , and $200.00 for a 30-minute reading…}, and goes into an explanation of how his dog has cancer and that was why he re-scheduled and etc. I was very sorry to hear that about his dog…but is Chip nuts or what ? He is chatting ON MY TIME, WHEN HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE GIVING ME A READING. I cut it short by telling him I understood { and I am an animal lover, I have pets, and I’ve lost pets when they passed away, in case I don’t sound very sensitive here}. Another thing he did to waste time , and I will warn you, if you get a reading with him you will have to CUT him OFF if you want him to stick to just predictions. Because he goes into “counselor mode” {he studied counseling and has a degree}, so you see that REALLY cuts into time that he SHOULD be using on as many predictions as he can make. Instead he will “Dr. Phil” you to pieces if you let him.
Did he do all these things that cut into my time during the reading so that he wouldn’t have to come up with as much “psychic” info ? Who knows. But I have to wonder.
Another thing that really blew my mind. I asked Chip if I will become a professional medium. I have DEFINITE mediumistic abilities. And to a degree I am psychic as well, like many people are. Several other psychic-mediums have all {separately} told me that I will become a professional medium. They also had no problem zeroing in on what I can do, { many things, but mainly it is hearing spirits or “clairaudience”}, but Chip only said he that I “really want to be” a medium, {???!!} Well since I did ask him about it I guess that gave him a big fat clue. I then had to ask him if the answer was either “yes” or “no” or in the middle ?! He said he thought I could do it but it would take work {I had to force that out of him, and it wasn’t so nice of him to just say ” you really want to be” and then leave it hanging until I asked him to pinpoint his answer a little more}.
He also said I was not very secure about it. NO CHIP, sorry, I was feeling a bit shy on the phone, that’s all. And my life is stressing me out, so I probably didn’t sound like a bulldozer ok ? I sometimes sound shy on the phone {I hate phones} with new people. So he interpreted that as if I am insecure about my abilities. I am not insecure about them. I have filled notebooks keeping track of all my experiences with spirit communication ! In fact, I thoroughly had expected him to say “yes you are a medium but it needs developing” or something to that effect {because I cannot ever tell when my experiences will happen, they are erratic, unlike a professional medium would be so I realize I do need practice}. And I thought maybe he could have given me an idea of when in the future I might turn professional. But that was it…no encouragement until I forced the issue and even then it was not that friendly. Why did he have no clue he was talking to a person with very similar abilities to his ?
When I told him that many other mediums all came up with the comment that I too would be a medium, and that I have experienced a lot of spirit contact he then firmed up his feeling that I could do it. Still, no real warmth or encouragement, and no stunning details.
One big reason why I asked him about all this was, although I had major spirit contact in my life for some years, it has in recent years decreased and is not as strong or dramatic as it once was. However, it was not so long ago that he couldn’t have picked up on it. Also, to some degree I am still experiencing these spiritual things.
Also, I would say he is not really polite enough. OK, I have a sense of humor and am not a “prude”, but he actually described my family’s rather dysfunctional, argument style {we are all a bit emotional and temperamental and tend to annoy each other if we interact too much, unfortunately but that is how it is}, well, he told me we are “always up each other’s *ss”. I realize Chip is actually often quite funny, in fact before this rather dull reading I felt affection for him when I saw him on TV. But you know, more respect and a little warmth in a reading would be a huge improvement for him. He can talk all he wants about “telling it like it is”, but that “style” can also be described as insensitive and will leave people with a sort of dirty feeling or even an insulted feeling instead of uplifted. There WAS a tradition in the best of Spiritualist circles to give positive readings…meaning, it really matters HOW you explain things to people. Do it with LOVE. Have some class and leave them with some dignity no matter WHAT their personal problems {because who is perfect ?}. If you give someone a negative, profane or even bland {or in this case, BOTH} reading it actually will NOT raise a good vibration {of course}. The reading won’t be inspiring or encouraging. Of course a good reading should address issues, but what is the excuse for profanity during what should be a spiritual reading ? None.
Want to hear something very ironic ? Mr. Profanity tells me in the reading I should study counseling {like he did !!!}, since “the things you tell people in readings have a big impact on their lives”. Obviously he’s oblivious to the fact he’s really not so great an influence, maybe needs to go back to school himself.
It’s not sappy or old-fashioned to be polite and realize that a reading is and SHOULD BE a good, uplifting encouraging SPIRITUAL experience. Unfortunately the focus goes off the clients and onto how you should just suck up to people like Chip, however bizarre or unprofessional they can be {people like Chip need to hold the people they do readings for in as much esteem as they hold themselves in}.
He also has complained {online I read this as a quote} about women wanting to know the state of their marriages or relationships with boyfriends. Chip sees this as silly or embarrassing or ridiculous. A waste of time. He is not a sympathetic person, and I don’t see him as good enough to counsel people if he has this cold, condescending attitude. Of course people want to know the state of their relationships. It’s a basic human need, to have a good relationship. Lumping people into one big pile and copping attitudes at them is just mean spirited. It’s THEIR READING they are paying for. It’s something that will help them out, so, what is the big deal ? He’s JUDGING them.
I regret spending the money on that reading with Chip. But at least if I ever trust another “professional psychic” again, I’ve been reminded on what to AVOID.

When is it TIME for Prayer?
By Stephen Piersall, Deliverance Ministry, Central NY.
6 a.m. and our 2 pugs are waking us up. Maybe I should pray before getting out of bed? Naw, I need to get up and take the dogs out. Wow, been out there for 15 minutes waiting for the pugs to do their duty. Heck, I guess I could have been praying outside with them but what would the neighbors think? Aw nothing like sitting in my rocker recliner and watching HLN news. Gee that was a fast 30 minutes, maybe tomorrow I can remember to take the TIME to pray about all the events that were broadcast about disasters, tragedies, etc. Well at least I got my oatmeal and morning meds all finished. Pray? I've got to check my Twitter, emails, and Face Book first. How did I just kill an hour of TIME doing all that? TIME sure flies by when you’re having fun. Let's watch some TV shows we recorded from last night. Yea that would be enjoyable and kill some TIME too.
Hmm what's for lunch TIME? Think I'll have a turkey sandwich today. Gulp! Maybe I should have taken the TIME and prayed before I ate it? TIME to take the dogs out for a long walk; we both need the exercise as well as they need to go potty. Well, that was a nice TIME strolling for 30 minutes, sure enjoyed the walk, and watched around the neighborhood to see what's going on. Pray? Wonder if I got any new emails, Tweets, and Face Book comments? TIME is 3:30 p.m. Yawn! Could take the TIME for a nap, but the pugs need to go potty again. That TIME it sure was fun, got to speak with a couple of neighbors, and their dogs played with ours, it was a grand ole TIME.
Supper TIME, sorry I don’t do dinner; I like to have TIME for supper like in the Bible. I’m a Christian you know, and like to take the TIME to follow the word of God. TIME to take the pugs out again, I’m sure I can think of some things I need to do for tomorrow while out with them, after all, I have all the TIME to do what I want.
TIME is 8:01 p. m. Phone rings! Don’t people know at this TIME we like to sit and watch TV until we fall asleep? It’s just a friend who had some free TIME and wanted to chat. Sigh! Finally, got them off the phone; just in the nick of TIME to catch the next program coming up. TIME is 10:30 p.m. Yawn! It’s TIME to take the pugs out for the last TIME tonight. All that TIME I was out there and our 1 year old pug took all the TIME just to go potty. I bet I was out there for at least 20 minutes of my TIME. Boy was I ever aggravated! What a waste of TIME.
It’s TIME to take my night meds. I’ll take the TIME to check the computer before I go to bed. Yawn! TIME is 11:30 p.m. Guess, I better get to bed and get some sleep TIME. Maybe tomorrow I can remember to find the TIME for some prayer? ZZZZZZZ!!!!
We hope this finds you blessed & highly favored in the Lord

The Supernatural & Satan's Speech Therapy
By Rev. Mark Hunnemann
If I were the devil (no comment) there is one small muscle in the human anatomy that I would work over-time trying to influence—the tongue.
“Possession and oppression are okay, but this is where we are inflicting maximum damage without being detected…and it all seems soooo mundane and natural. Without a hint of our diabolical presence, we are destroying: marriages, friendships, churches, and cultures; we have even caused these verminized humans to start wars with it. He he…on Sundays they praise the Enemy and on Monday they murder-mouth each other! And by muzzling their mouths, we can get the Enemy’s preachers to be silent about my most extreme deceptions. I know a few are bound to slip through the cracks, but you better not let them talk about my darling—ghosts… growl…And make them embarrassed to mention that NAME. Yes, human words are spreading the dust of darkness faster than anything else. Now, say after me: sticks and stones….” (over heard at a daily Satan-led strategy meeting discussing his “speech therapy”)
What happened? Thirteen years after our divorce, I am still plagued by that question. After starting off so well, not a day goes by that I don’t grieve the destruction of my family—as a family. I ask this question here, because this is where the paranormal rubber meets the road of hard reality. I usually speak of supernatural type occurrences, but along with sin, there is a demonic ploy that seems to be a common denominator in all relational meltdowns. Keeping an eye on the paranormal is useless unless it can shed some light on the ever growing problem of marital distress—the most basic, God-ordained institution that is the cement of a culture. Satan is culture wise, and he knows that if he can get marriage in trouble, then that society will begin to unravel and self-destruct. Tragically, much of what occurs between many husbands and wives is the result of the influence of the demonic denizens of the paranormal realm. My intent is to educate and equip us to be discerning of Satan’s relational schemes and discuss practical insights in how to achieve beauty in our earthly relationships.
Though much is uncertain, and varies from one situation to the next, I am certain of the primary cause of why a marriage either flourishes or flounders. Communication…what we say, and how we say it, is by far, the chief determiner of marriage wellness. If a digital recorder were strapped to you, what communication patterns would it reveal? .Since self-examination is fast becoming a lost art, then self-awareness is at all-time low.….Couples can experience all manner of stressors (finances, in-laws, sex, and so on), but it is how they talk to each other in times of stress that will make them either bitter or better. Stress is, in a sense, neutral; whether it pulls people together or drives them apart, is largely dependent on how they communicate…what is said, and how it is said. If you walk into some folk’s houses you are immediately hit with a stench; like something died. The friction is palpable.. I remember with sadness what one of my children said at a young age, “Daddy, I like it when we have people over because the house is happy then.” What and how we say things will either create an ambience of security, warmth, and sweetness, or it will create a palpable sense of insecurity (walking on eggshells), chilled anxiety, and sourness.
One couple forecloses on a house, and they become even more devoted to each other. Another couple forecloses on a house, and they start sleeping in separate beds. The difference? One listens to the demonic temptation and the blame game begins, but the other resists the same temptation and encourages each other in the Lord. Statistics show that being a Christian (or professing so), sadly, makes no difference in how this couple handles the stress. Recently, a friend went through a cluster of serious setbacks (some might call them crises), and there is good reason to suspect demonic attack. Though smashed with initial anguish, they chose…CHOSE…to believe that God is good.. all the time. And they verbalized their contentment in the Lord. I was, and continue to be, amazed and blessed by their attitude and tongue control.
The power of life and death is in the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Prov. 18:21) How does one comment on a verse like that, except to urge each of us to really embrace and acknowledge the reality of the life and death nature of our words. In James 3:1-12) James laments that hardly anyone has good tongue control. In v. 6 he says that a word can set the whole course of our lives on fire, and that this tongue fire is itself lit by hell. We spread Satan’s kingdom when we sin with our mouths; he is known as the Accuser of the brethren. We should be very cautious before we open our mouths, but many let dribble out whatever comes to our minds. “Where there are many words, sin is unavoidable, but the one who controls his tongue is wise. (Prov. 10:19) Introvert or extrovert, it makes no difference—we are not to engage in diareha of the mouth. Also, you will look in vain for a text that minimizes mouth-sin due to how we feel. (some medical conditions can make obedience more difficult) We would not use feelings as an excuse for stabbing a person’s body, so why use it as an excuse for stabbing someone’s heart?. The power of life and death lies in what we say; we should control our tongues as if it were a 44 magnum handgun, with the safety off….VERY carefully.:
Listen to the words of Jesus, “For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” (Mat. 12:34) What we say is an accurate indicator of what is habitually happening in our thoughts. With Satan, the mind or heart is where the real battle is waged because the mind is the contact or entry point for the words of temptation, accusation, anxiety, and so on. Right then and there is where the battle is won or lost. Are you still wearing the digital recorder? I hope so because listen to what Jesus says next, “I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(Matt. 12:36-37) Believers will undergo a judgment, and much of the divine scrutiny will center on our communication. How you speak to your spouse or family will be the area of closest scrutiny. Before the eternal pleasures of heaven, there will be a real judgment…if that does not get our attention, I don’t know what will.
Most everyone is probably familiar with Eph. 4:27 where we are warned to not let the sun go down on our anger, or we will give the devil an opportunity or foothold. Paraphrased…”Hey, if you have had an argument with your spouse, make sure it is dealt with before you fall asleep. Because if you don’t, that gives the demonic a green light to graduate from mere temptation to demonic influence. The protection is lowered, a door is opened, and they are allowed to begin oppressing you.” It then becomes a vicious cycle, as the oppression increases so does the anger; harsh words flow and then the door is opened wider..and so on.. Friends, please make it a habit to not fall asleep angry. Christian couples are to help accelerate each other’s sanctification; .to be ministers of each others joy; to help them FEEL the security and significance we have in the Lord by what we say; to increase each other’s fruitfulness in extending the Lord’s kingdom; to enjoy each other and experience a piece of heaven here on earth. ”I am sorry, please forgive me. ” and “I do forgive you” should come out of our mouths more frequently as we mature in Christ, because more spiritual nerves are exposed…we become more sensitive to motives and tone. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting, but it does mean not bringing the matter up again and holding it against the person. God cannot forget because He knows all things, but the beauty is that he does not hold our sins against us anymore.
One way to test your tongue control is to look at compliments versus criticisms, and the ratio between the two. Under criticism would come: constructive criticism, destructive criticism,, helpful hints, advice, suggestions, comments, and so on (you get the picture) When we mention criticism we usually are thinking about overtly destructive criticism, but any comments that “corrects” the other person has the potential to be destructive if:
it is said too often, spoken in an unloving tone, and is not balanced by a preponderance of overtly constructive compliments.. In this context, kindness is NOT correcting every mistake you see or hear; Jesus didn’t. "Love covers a multitude of sins." Let me hasten to add that some constructive criticism is necessary in a healthy relationship. My point is that we should compliment each other much more than we correct or criticize. This is where some of us will need to do some repenting, because the compliment versus criticism ratio is way out of whack. No wonder the “Song of Solomon” is so lovely; it is filled with compliments and no criticisms! If we did that one thing, our relationships would be a thing of real and observable beauty. Would the digital recorder show a preponderance of compliments or criticism? Let us offer up to God our mouths as a living sacrifice—it may keep trying to crawl of the altar but we put it right back.
Looking back now, I know that our house was infested, and we were under demonic oppression because of Satan’s speech therapy at work. My ex-wife cannot keep tenants in the house, because there is “something wrong with it.” I literally ran out the back door and fled…an utterly broken man. The Lord has been so kind and tender to such an unworthy sinner. Praise be to the Name—JESUS!

The Real Supernatural World vs. The Fake One
By Lisa Grace
With the prevalence of science fantasy and science fiction books and movies, the line between the real supernatural world and the fake have become blurred.
The practice of magic, the use of Ouija boards, and tarot cards, have become common place and are no longer considered by society as dangerous and a form of attracting demons.
On twitter and other forms of social media, you can get in touch with thousands of people who practice drinking blood, and practicing magic. Many believe because of the blurred lines, these practices are just “fun” and not a way to attract demonic activity.
For this reason, I would love to see a distinction made between the real supernatural world and the fake one.
In the book world, I believe it's time for a new genre. Science fiction and science fantasy are separate genres. In science fiction, you have stories that must fit into the science world based on known or plausible theories of science.
Science fantasy includes but is not limited to the aliens, wizards, dragons etc... and things that do not exist in our world, and do not have to follow the 22 rules that hold our universe together.
Books about the supernatural should be split the same way. We know certain supernatural creatures exist form the Bible. (Colossians 1:16, Romans 8:38) They are split into several categories: The Arch Angel (We are aware of only one from the Bible), Angels, Seraphim, Cherubim, Principalities, Authorities, Powers, Thrones, Might, Dominion, disembodied Demons, Nephilim, Giants, the women (in heaven), and the beasts before the throne.
Other supernatural creatures are man-made, such as vampires, werewolves, zombies, aliens etc...
I would like to see a split in the genre between the real supernatural and the rest.
What do you think?

Special Edition ~ Reap's Open Letter to Chip Coffey
Chip Coffey on the Warpath Again But is His Posse Following?
By Kirby Robinson
Over the weekend, Mr. Coffey returned to his old ways of taking to the internet and asking his army of zombies and attack dogs to do his dirty work for him. It seems he has issues with one of my bloggers, Reap Paden, concerning websites that poke fun of Mr. Coffey. These satirical websites look into Chip's claims of abilities that have yet to be proven. Chip has asked his followers to send emails to Reap.
In all fairness, we have allowed Reap to post his response to Chip’s blog. Unlike Chip, we aren't asking our readers to respond to Chip.
Chris Fleming & Fireburndoctor
On May 31, 2012, a blog by Reap Paden was posted concerning claims of healing by a group of individuals that are doing things no one in the world is doing. Reap mentioned a gentleman by the name of Chris Fleming is featured on the fireburndoctor's website. This includes Mr. Fleming's case, a video explaining the events that led up to his burn, and the amazing results that followed after making a phone call to the fireburndoctors. Someone by the name of Chris Fleming even appeared on the Darkness Dave radio show to discuss this miraculous service. Reap claimed that it was our beloved Chris Fleming of the paranormal world--you know the one that helped exploit children on Psychic Kids. It has been pointed out that this is not the same Chris Fleming, so our enemies danced in the streets claiming we made a huge mistake.
Which was not true. It appears the representative of fireburndoctor gave the impression that the Chris Fleming of the paranormal was the same Chris Fleming featured on their site. Thus, the deception was on their part -- not ours.
Reap's Open Letter to Chip Coffey
Hello Chip,
Word has been goin around you are upset about something. I don't really pay much (none actually) attention to people who act shitty, do stupid stuff, treat others like crap and then start crying when someone evens things out a little. Kinda like you've been doing. You thought it was funny to make fun of Kirby's condition, it really shouldn't have been funny. To a person with any compassion it wouldn't have been funny and to a person with any class the thought of making fun like that would never be something they would actually do. I know there has been some bad blood but to go to that level? I've heard a lot of people bad mouthing you over the years Chip. Sometimes I've heard people make fun of your sexual orientation, or say you are a pedophile. I never laughed at those shots, in fact, hard as it may be to believe, I've put a stop to such talk many times because it just isn't right. I wonder where your line is sometimes Chip. How does it make you feel when others take those cheap shots? Does it make you feel good so you thought it would be cool to make another person feel good the same way?
I also know you have a habit of sending your cult-like followers to do your dirty work. Instead of dealing with things like a grown adult you would rather send some easily controlled weak-minded groupies to harass anyone who is bad-mouthing the almighty Chip Coffey. Sure you will probably claim you don't do such things but you must be aware of it happening at least. I've never heard you say "Now now people, don't be bullies. I'm an adult and I will deal with my problems on my own." For instance I have received several emails from people who are less (much less) than sane or intelligent on your behalf. It must be flattering to have the support of people who are not quite playing with a full deck, a few rides short of a carnival, a couple sandwiches short of.....well you get my point. Let me inform you of something. The little moron army that has worked to intimidate people on previous occasions is going down a different road this time. This road leads straight into my yard. Anyone who emails to say a bunch of crazy shit about going to hell, having no soul, being jealous of you (that one cracks me up!!) or any other babbling will find themselves in the wrong yard. In case you still don't get it I'll make it even more clear--They don't stand a chance, every keystroke they peck out is a complete waste of energy and time.
Speaking of emails it would be polite to take a few minutes and thank everyone who has been sending supportive emails about the chipcoffey.info site. It's been good to know so many people are finding such satisfaction from Chip Coffey being made to look foolish. It seems you have done a lot of people wrong Chip and they are pissed at ya. Did you ever think maybe you were in the wrong on some occasions? No of course not, you are just a poor innocent victim right? Nope, that's not true, you aren't innocent and the only thing you are a victim of is your own inflated ego. Nobody should consider themselves above any and all criticism. You need to wake up and at least try to understand there is not a special set of rules for you. Nature didn't mutate you so that you have special abilities or the ability to tap into some power everyone else has but just haven't learned to use yet. The laws of nature apply to you too Chip. There is also no special rule that allows for you to behave in any manner you wish, or to treat others unfairly without anyone calling you on it just because you are named Chip Coffey. I know you are able to fool a lot of people with your little act, maybe you have even fooled yourself but a delusion is a delusion try to snap out of it. Can't you provide a positive message for people without outright deceiving them or possibly doing them harm.
I know some people (including you) think I am just doing this because I hate you, or I'm jealous (ha ha man that's funny!) or I'm just a childish jerk who needs attention, none of those reasons are correct. The reason is because you are being and have been a dick yet you portray yourself as a good, wholesome person. You have in the past supported Chris Moon, Dana, Blabs and the other mooniacs while they slandered me claiming I had done things that were totally untrue. You acted as if you knew the things they were saying were factual. That is when you gained my attention. The things they said were all lies however so I said as much and went on with my life because I am an adult. Then I start to hear about you causing others to fear for their safety due to your little moron army intimidating your critics. My respect for you went down again. Then you start the Psychic Kids gig. No matter how many people spoke out questioning your actions you blew them all off as tho they had no valid concerns whatsoever. Over and over again I see you acting like you are so pure and positive while you act like an inconsiderate prick (to say the least) behind your facade. I'm tired of you now Chip, someone needs to give you a reality check. At this point I don't expect you can start acting like a normal human being but it's worth a try. I am not going to let you continue to abuse, disrespect, and harm others without saying or doing something about it. There are plenty of people who think the same way as I do Chip, its not as if I am acting alone. You deserve to be mocked for the things you do and have done.
Sincerely,
Reap Paden

The Karmapa: Tibetan Buddhism's Next Great Leader?
| HH The Gyalwang Karmapa |
At first look, His Holiness The Seventeenth Gyalwang Karmapa is intimidating. Well built, self possessed, and with a keen glance, he walks more like a middle weight boxer than one of the most venerated religious figures in Tibetan Buddhism. As he moves around the room, the sly and playful side of his twenty-six year old character flashes occasionally as he teases his capable translator and raises an eyebrow with interest at an hors d'oeuvre nervously presented to him. Later, as he begins to share his perspective on individual spirituality and global concerns, a fully formed figure emerges - that of a powerful young man who is rapidly becoming a world religious leader.
HH the Gyalwang Karmapa is the 17th incarnated head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, that began slightly over 900 years ago. The Karma Kagyu school is one of four in Tibet, represents approximately 20% of Tibetan Buddhists, and has hundreds of monasteries and centers all over the world. All four schools of Tibetan Buddhism recognize the leadership of HH the Dalai Lama who the Karmapa recently joined in Washington D.C. for the Kalachakra gathering for World Peace. However he bristles at any talk of him being the next Dalai Lama: "I will not be the next Dalai Lama, That Is Impossible."
While it is impossible for the Karmapa to become the next Dalai Lama for the obvious reason of lineage, he has begun to command the spiritual resonance and political heft associated with his elder Tibetan spiritual leader. In the years to come, the Karmapa may play a crucial role in the central concern of Tibet - China. The Chinese government recognizes the Karmapa's legitimacy which may make him a powerful negotiating partner in that ongoing struggle.
The Karmapa frames the issue as a question of human rights:
"One of the things that the Chinese do not understand is that the Tibetans are seeking basic human rights - freedom of speech and freedom to practice our religion. The Chinese frame it as a political issue, but the Tibetans are not a political people."
His Holiness the Karmapa is quick to point out: "I am not anti-Chinese. I am a spiritual teacher and am working for the welfare of all sentiment beings. I am not anti anything, including China. But I will advocate for the truth and I want the truth to be known."
Care for all sentient beings extends beyond the issues of the Tibetan homeland for the Karmapa. He has spoken about the need for equalizing the status between women and men in Tibet and within Buddhism, and is engaged in the conversation between science and Buddhist thought. But perhaps nothing has defined him so clearly as his interest in the environment. At a gathering of over 2,000 Tibetans in New York he surprised his audience by veering into a discussion around environmental concerns, a consistent topic of conversation for him which has earned him the moniker by some of 'The Green Buddha.' In 2009, the Gyalwang Karmapa convened two conferences on environmental protection for Kagyu monasteries and nunneries. The outcome of these conferences was a commitment from over 40 monasteries to put environmental protection into action by planting trees, protecting wild life, conserving water, organizing waste management, and adopting renewable energy sources.
When asked about what it is about Buddhist teaching that inspires his environmental activism, the Karmapa says that is an easy question:
"In Buddhism we aspire to benefit all sentiment beings. If we have any opportunity to give happiness or well being then we take it with delight and enthusiasm. The environment is the source of life for not only human beings, but all living creatures in the world. Therefor if we respect and protect the environment we bring benefit to countless sentient beings. This is what in Buddhism we call practicing the perfection of skillful means. While we might be able practice generosity by giving a donation to a person in need, that is a very finite act of altruism. But if we protect areas such as the snow mountains of the Himalayas and the rivers that flow from them then we will be nourishing a source of life and vital support for countless fish, and humans and other beings. Caring for the environment is a wonderful opportunity for Buddhists to care for sentient beings - one simple action can benefit so many and is the essence of practicing the Mahayana quality of great compassion."
The Karmapa's role as a spiritual teacher is of special interest to the growing number of people in the West who are seeking Buddhist wisdom and Dharma, or teaching. A major question for many of these Buddhist practitioners is how to authentically understand and practice a tradition in the West that has such deep roots in the Tibetan plateau. The Karmapa does not gloss over the challenge:
"The Buddha's teaching were allowed to take root in Tibet in an isolated context, undisturbed, and almost in secret for over 1,000 years. Because they were not distracted by external busyness, the Tibetans were able to deeply immerse themselves in the teachings and develop very strong habits of the practice. The broad and open spaces of Tibet offered an environment where people could rely on the spiritual methods in a strong way. The West is different. In the distractions and crowds of the cities there is not as much time to practice spiritual traditions in same way, and so maybe there is a challenge to allowing the teachings of Buddhism to take root here in a deep way."
Following up on this discouraging remark, The Karmapa continued:
"On the other hand, maybe the busyness that we all contend with can be employed in a skillful way to help us lead more spiritual lives. In Buddhism we speak of the symbolic teacher of appearances, and that means that the phenomenon that we witness in our day to day lives can actually teach us deep lessons about the way things are and the inter-connectedness of all things. So if Tibetan Buddhism was the tradition that emphasized the quality of faith and derived great benefit spiritually cultivating that quality of faith, then perhaps Buddhism in the modern world and the western world will be a Buddhism that derives benefit from the quality of discernment and intelligence. So perhaps we will benefit more from relying less on faith and relying more on our intelligence. If we do that then I think that there is hope that the spiritual teachings of Buddhism can take root deeply in the modern world and in the West."
